The Pirate Captain: Chronicles of a Legend, by Kerry Lynne

“I am Nathanael J. E. Blackthorne, the pirate captain. Please, reserve your accolades regarding me fame and conquests for another time. During the year of our lord 1753, I was sailing the West Indies, minding the oars in me own boat, pursuing me sole purpose in life: to disrupt the unholy alliance of two corrupt men, to destroy their lives as they destroyed mine. I mistakenly kidnap Catherine Mackenzie—wrong person, easy mistake, you understand—and me life went arsey-turvey. Having lost hearth and heart to the Jacobite War, and wanted for war crimes, Cate has the grit and savvy to have survived years destitute and alone in the cesspool known as London. When arrest seems imminent, Cate, through whose eyes this story is told, buys passage on the first ship away. Now, Cate desires but one thing: a place to belong. Alas, if it were only that simple. This is a story of scarred and blinded people. It’s the story of trust, or rather, the lack of. It’s the story of loss of faith and the disbelief that Providence might ever smile again. Have you the courage to join us?”

Review
"The Pirate Captain unfolds in visual images rather than being just words on the page. While a thread of romance runs through this tale, The Pirate Captain is not a romance. It's a gritty novel of piracy and the sea that's realistically told in such a way that transports the reader back in time." - Pirates and Privateers, Cindy Vallor

A Diamond in the Treasure Trove" The Pirate Captain bears many resemblances to Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series that I would almost call it "Outlander: the Pirate edition.- Romantic Historical Review, Goodreads, Emery Lee

About the Author

"Kerry Lynne was a history major in college and went into teaching. Then she wound up in the decorative painting world, where she traveled, taught and published for some 30 years. And then her hand wouldn't work. So she went back to what she knew: writing, history and sailing." Lynne's fictional writing achievements includes The Pirate Captain, Chronicles of a Legend (Nor Silver), 2014 Next Generation Indie Book Finalist Award for Historical Fiction (first novel) and a short story publication in LocoThology #3-The Price of Victory (deleted scene from The Pirate Captain, Nor Silver). The second book in The Pirate Captain series "Nor Gold" was released in 2014 which continues the legend of Captain Blackthorne.

Gone with the Pirates
By T. Edmund
Wow, OK, so where do I begin with this book? I guess I'll start with the best description I can muster: A Mils & Boon romance set on a pirate ship (apparently this has been done before despite being second only in unlikeliness to Dinosaur erotica) stretched to more than 600 pages through endless mind numbing information dumps about sailing and 'character development'

The first warning I was reading a book I probably should have put down, was the beginning chapter being in pure 'pirate' with so much copious boat-speak I found myself balking before the story even started. Luckily from chapter two onward the prose is somewhat ordinary, however there was a constant jarring bounce between forced lingo and plain language that I constantly found myself thrown out of the story.

Such as the story was - the entire first part is devoted to our main characters Cate and Nathan (honestly couldn't Lynne have picked names at least a little nautical sounding) running away from each other while somehow sharing the Captain's cabin at night (a curtain apparently is all needed.)

The second and third parts pick up slightly with more action, although almost every fight is depicted by our main character Cate fretting about Nathan's wellbeing. without actually getting to see much of whats going on (which generally wasn't much). Unless you're actually drawn into the romance of Nathan and Cate, there really is little tension to carry the novel, the book reads more as a series of piratey experiences of Cate while Nathan avoid each other.

SPOILER ALERT
The worst thing about this book is after 600 pages of dithering and finally getting some resolution the plot is thrown pointlessly into the need for a sequel, I honesty would have preferred an unhappy conclusion to the threat of another book.

You really need to read these books!
By Carol B.
I found this after reading Gabaldon's last book as someone had told me they had similar writing styles. Kerry didn't disappoint! These are well written and very detailed. And it has something for everyone! Historical fiction, romance and sailing! Having never sailed, I found her writing interesting but not too technical. And seeing the ships through the heroine's eyes is beautifully done.

this is the most wonderful series I've ever read
By Susan Freeze Jennings
This is Book #1 of The Pirate Captain, Chronicles of a Legend. Briefly, this is the most wonderful series I've ever read, bar none. A fabulous story, exceptionally well written, a cast of beautifully portrayed characters with laughing, crying, suffering, fighting, loving, and living the time of their lives! I can't say enough to describe my feelings in this regard. I'd buy it again and again. I am re-reading every single word I have loved since picking this book up. Buy it.....you'll never regret it!
