Podium Finish, by Beth Pond

With six months until the Olympic Games, seventeen-year-old Harper's life is pretty much perfect. She's fighting for the starting spot on Team USA Women's Hockey, and for the first time ever, she has a crush on a guy who likes her back. She feels like the luckiest girl in the world, until she runs a risky play at practice and breaks her knee, thereby sentencing herself to six weeks in a cast and possibly ending her Olympic dream before it even starts.

For seventeen-year-old Alex, being anything less than the best is unacceptable. That's why, after a miserable debut season at the senior level, the former junior national singles champion switches to ice dance. Her skating partner, Ace, is an "all skating all the time" type of guy, which would be fine, if he'd stop keeping secrets about the real reason he and his former partner broke up. Now is not the time for second thoughts, but how can Alex skate her best if she can’t trust her partner…or herself?

As the pressure to make the Olympic team builds, the girls must rely on each other, because if there’s one thing they both know, it's that the only thing harder than skating to the top is staying there.

Two Stories in One
By lilacqueen75
I'm not a big sports fanatic. I watch a little here and there, especially if my kids are playing, but one thing that I absolutely love and spend hours and hours and hours watching, is the Olympics. I get into all of the sports and come to know the athletes. I watch sports that I would never watch otherwise, but this big event is heaven. Podium Finish was so much fun because not only did it tell one athletes road to the Olympics, but two.

Harper and Alex are roommates at the Olympic Training Center and they're also best friends. They understand the dedication, sacrifice, and commitment it takes to succeed. I love watching them support one another. Each chapter goes back and forth between the two 17 year old girls and it's told in first person, so we can really understand their feelings and thoughts. I was completely caught up in their stories and felt this was the perfect time to read it--just a few weeks before the Winter Olympics! I'm so excited!

I loved the emotion and learning experiences these girls faced. I loved the relationships they had to figure out and deal with--teams, families, friends, enemies, etc. I even found myself shedding a few tears, although they were tears of joy and pride, I promise. The growth that occurred was perfect for their ages and experiences.

Content: there were a few mild kissing scenes and thoughts of taking things further, but making a choice not to; there was one situation of a boy and girl in the same bed, but clothed and nothing happened. Clean.

SUCH A FUN READ!
By quibecca
I don't even know where to start. This book came to me right at the right time. I would have loved it anyway, but with the Winter Olympics coming up and being a HUGE Olympics fan, made this book even more exciting to me.

I often wonder what goes through the heads of Olympians as they struggle each day to make the team and this was a little glimpse into that life. Whether it was real or not, it was intense. I cannot even wrap my head around that kind of competition and stress.

I cannot imagine living away from my family to train every day for hours a day knowing that my hard work may or may not pay off. It was an exiting ride from the beginning to the finish.

Figure skating is my FAVORITE Winter Olympic sport so this book made me love it even more. The hard work and dedication it takes to be an Olympian is amazing. I am not a hockey fan, especially women's hockey, but this book made me feel like I was right there watching it go down, and I loved it.

I loved how Harper and Alex found their joy in being in the competition. They lived for it. I could really feel the emotions they were going through while reading this book. I found my self feeling anxious just waiting to hear who made the final cut for the Hockey team. That is how in to this book I was. I LOVE it when an author does that for me.

I don't think there is anything I didn't like about this book. It was exciting, interesting, intense, and had a love story to boot. Seriously a great read. A fun read!

Fantastic book
By Ana
Podium Finish is one of the best books I have read in a very long time. This is a great novel that tells us the story of a group of teenagers training for the Olympic Games. I couldn't put it down once I started reading it. The author did a great job portraying the main characters, Harper and Alex. If you like reading stories about friendship, sports, Olympic Games, family, etc. this is the book for you. It has got everything, funny moments, romantic moments, etc. I can't wait to read more books from Beth Pond.

Kind of unrealistic for HS teachers, I thought
By J. Lindsay
There are some good ideas in this book. However, I thought it was very unrealistic that the key to the author's approach is an immense amount of research on every child. This could certainly work at the elementary level, but at high school, with the enormous number of different kids we see each day, it doesn't seem at all realistic.

the illustrations don't really match up with the text
By Markos
This illustrated edition of the Lord's prayer has some strengths. The font is large and the illustrations are nice as far as they go. At the end of the book, a paraphrase of each verse of the prayer is found, which kids would be able to understand.

The main problem is that for the most part, the illustrations do not really illuminate the text. "Hallowed be thy name" is accompanied by a picture of a baby. "Thy will be done" is on the same page as a kid drawing with chalk. The only place where the two make sense is "Give us this day our daily bread," which accompanies a girl feeding birds some seeds.

Rick Warren's contribution is just a couple of paragraphs.

You really can't go wrong with any book that includes some words of Jesus, but more relevant pictures would have been nicer.

Theologically Lacking
By Irish Twin Mom
I don't have direct quotes because I don't have the book in front of me. It was used as part of a devotional chapel service at my child's school. I was very disappointed that the theology was lacking. By that, I mean that every place where the Lord is being exalted Scripturally, the author turned the words into human-focused statements. Like another review stated, the illustration about "Thy Kingdom Come" (for example) was not about the King. Sad that a book with so much potential and nice drawings would be so theologically eschew. I give it two stars not because of the artwork or the page breaks or for any other aesthetic preference. Rather, I want a children's book that talks about the Lord's prayer to talk more about the Lord than about the humans praying the prayer. I believe certain theological concepts and Scriptural passages can be simplified for children without compromising theological integrity.

A prayer we can all learn from
By Amazon Customer
When the disciples asked, "Lord, teach us to pray," Jesus did not simply tell them. He showed them. He modeled for all of us how we can talk to God in words that are simple yet profound. This prayer, known as "The Lord's Prayer," has endured for two thousands years, and is now available with colorful images for a new generation to discover. I read this book tonight to our 3-yr old daughter and 5-yr old son. We all enjoyed looking at the artwork and discussing the meaning of Jesus' precious words.

The Lord's Prayer introduces us to all the important elements of prayer: Adoration. Submission. Supplication. Confession. A longing for heaven. This kids' edition pairs the poetic beauty of the King James Version with the beautiful artwork of Richard Watson. Watson creatively depicts the wonder and almost whimsical nature of prayer through the trusting eyes of a child. At times, I would like to see a clearer connection between the illustrations and the content of Scripture. Some of the images are brilliant (a girl feeding sparrows to show how God supplies our daily bread), while others are just too abstract (two children walking hand-in-hand up a stairway to show God's eternal glory).

By depicting children from many countries, Watson gives the book a multicultural flavor and shows that God invites people of all ages and nationalities to talk to Him through His Son. The brief prayers and explanatory notes by Rick Warren at the back of the book are a great addition, and can provide great talking points for parents. All in all, a good tool to help introduce children to the power and beauty of the Lord's prayer.

Reading the Qur'an: The Contemporary Relevance of the Sacred Text of Islam, by Ziauddin Sardar

"I grew up reading the Qur'an on my mother's lap," writes Ziauddin Sardar. "It's an experience I share with most Muslim children. And so it is that our connection to the Qur'an is infused with associations of the warmest and most enduring of human bonds."

In Reading the Qur'an, Sardar--one of Europe's leading public intellectuals--laments that for far too many Muslims, the Qur'an he had learned in his mother's lap has become a stick used for ensuring conformity and suppressing dissenting views. Indeed, some find in the Qur'an justification for misogyny, validation for hatred of others, an obsession with dress and mindless ritual, rules for running modern states. Arguing passionately but reasonably against these trends, Sardar speaks out for a more open, less doctrinaire approach to reading the Qur'an. He contends that the Qur'an is not fixed in stone for all time, but a dynamic text which every generation must encounter anew, and whose relevance and implications for our time we have yet to fully discover. The words of the Qur'an imply movement: the religious life, it tells us, is not about standing still but always striving to make our life, our society, the entire world around us a better place for everyone. Sardar explores the Qur'an from a variety of perspectives, from traditional exegesis to hermeneutics, critical theory, and cultural analysis, drawing fresh and contemporary lessons from the Sacred Text. He also examines what the Qur'an says about such contemporary topics as power and politics, rights of women, suicide, domestic violence, sex, homosexuality, the veil, freedom of expression, and evolution.

Ziauddin Sardar opens a new window on this remarkable Sacred Text, in a book that will engage all devout Muslims and will interest anyone curious about the Qur'an and Islam today.

Review

"This lucid, scholarly and exciting book could not be more timely; it takes the reader on a spiritual and intellectual journey that is essential for Muslim and non-Muslim alike and addresses some of the most pressing needs of our time." -Karen Armstrong, author of A History of God and Muhammad: A Biography of the Prophet

"[Sardar] is asking the right questions, and the health of the world community over the next couple of centuries may depend on how well, and how often, others in his faith ask the same questions." - National Review

"Sardar is passionate in his approach without being dogmatic. Will appeal to many open-minded readers of other faiths and those generally interested in spirituality." --Booklist

"If one could pick just one book to connect the Muslim past with its complex present and future potential, Reading the Qur'an would be that book. To use a metaphor from the eleventh-century exemplar of rational mysticism, Imam Ghazzali, both Muslims and non-Muslims must 'sail into the endless ocean of its meanings,' with Ziauddin Sardar the nimble captain on that voyage of hope and discovery." -Professor Bruce Lawrence, Duke University

"Sardar explores the Quran from a variety of perspectives, drawing fresh and contemporary lessons from the Sacred Text." --Islamic Horizons

"A helpful book for opening the minds of spiritually engaged readers interested in the place of holy books in today's world." -- Library Journal

In Search of Rational Thinkers
By Aliya I Khan
This book is an introdution to the discourse urgently needed in all muslim communities. It discusses important issues in a very clear, concise, and contemporary manner. It has given me the desire to use common sense in my practice of Islam, and not the 'arabasized version' of Islam being followed by so many muslims. May we have more thinkers in the newer generations to rectify what the current misinterpretations of the Quran have led the muslims to, a 7th century ritualistic practice of this beautiful faith.

This is an excellent analysis of the Qur'an
By Dr Saqib Qureshi
This is an excellent analysis of the Qur'an. It's thoughtful, well researched and cogent. I can't imagine it's the sort of thing that will go down well with the lunatics in the Muslim world who are all too keen on extremist positions and their corresponding brothers in the non-Muslim world whose xenophobia and Islamophobia is matched only by their ignorance. Anybody who is interested in Islam should pick this book up

By Ajab
I actually want to write out the entirety of my notes herein, but as they are several pages long, I'll give a general summary as to why I've given the book a poor grade. I won't comment on the binding or paper quality of the book beyond saying that the hardcover is exceptionally bound, with beautiful cream pages, and an elegant design. So, on-wards to the actual review.

The book is divided into four parts, but the most important part is the first: the 'Overview'. Here Sardar gives the methodology he plans to proceed with, the crux of which can be stated so:

1. The Qur'an is a eternal book, unbound in time, and valid for all times.
2. The Qur'an is a personal book, and each person must engage with it at a private level to properly understand it.
3. The classical exegites made the mistake of becoming too literal by engaging in a line-by-line commentary.

Everything said in the book is essentially just an extension of these three points. The problem I have is that these points are contradictory. You see Sardar doesn't make the distinction of the Qur'an-in-itself and the Quran-as-it-is, and assumes the latter to be the only one. He gives the Qur'an its eternal nature only by endorsing the view of Derridian 'deconstructionism'. He says that the Quran needs to be given meaning according to each time which would essentially make the Quran's message moot.

Kierkegaard talks about this in his books. You see, the Qur'an has to dictate how society runs, not the other way. We cannot understand through our society, but rather our society has to be appreciated through the wisdom of Scripture. Take the analogy of medicine and illness. Through pathology we must categorize bacteria, we cannot categorize pathology through bacteria. It would not do that if we all got rabies we suggest that to be rabid is healthy.

From thence the book begins to simply contradict itself and present false information. One of the factual errors Sardar makes is when he mentions the commentary of the 'Andulasian mystic Ibn 'l Arabi'. Now Sardar admits he does not know Arabic, which is the only reason I can see for this mistake. You see there are two Ibn Arabi's and both are from Andulasia. However the mystic and poet Ibn Arabi al-Hatimi should not be confused with Abu Bakr Ibn Arabi who was a Maliki jurist who wrote the 'Akham al-Quran' (the Teachings of the Quran). The exegesis was written by the jurist not the mystic. Now this isn't a mistake I would penalize a normal person with - this is very, very common - but you don't expect an expert of his field, a person writing for OUP to make this mistake.

Sardar also makes two distinctions in history: our time vs. classical period. The problem is that the mufassirin (exegites) Sardar mentioned aren't from any one time. I mean Islam started in 700, and the first exegesis is usually taken to be written by a disciple of the Companion al-Abbas named Tafsir al-Abbasi. Between that and people like Ibn Taymiyyah or Imam ar-Razi nearly 800 years passed! Surely those 800 years *did* have their differences with the time of the Prophet, and if the scholars over this time agree it is because teachings deduced from a philosophical method (synthetic analysis) *must* be true.

I will give in to Sardar that each person faced his/her own issues and settled them in their commentaries. And I do agree we need commentaries for our own time but I'm not willing to throw away all the work done before us. We need to analyze where they were wrong, how the situation changed and amend that, and that alone. Principles which have been deduced through reason cannot be ignored until their link can be disproved. We cannot simply ignore everything said before our time! And a lot of it need not change.

Sardar continuously states that line-by-line commentary made the classical scholars literal, but that is simply untrue. Whilst the Hanbali school of though has favoured a literal interpretation it has been rejected by the majority of Muslims. Sardar makes no mention of Tawilat Ahlul Quran, one of the most important commentaries and literally a tawilat instead of tafsir. You see tafsir uses hadith, and other elements alongside logic to understand the Quran, but a Tawilat is a commentary on the Quran from reason alone! The concept has existed and Imam Maturidi even wrote a 10 volume tome on it, but it remains unmentioned by Sardar!

So for these reasons, among others, I give Sardar a low ranking. Bring on the hate. :*

20:21 Vision: Twentieth-Century Lessons for the Twenty-first Century, by Bill Emmott

The Editor in Chief of The Economist illuminates what global issues mattered in the last century--and how the ways in which we deal with them will shape our lives in the next

The attacks on September 11th, 2001, shook the rich West out of its complacency; suddenly, peace looked to be in peril. Even before that time prosperity was endangered, as campaigns mounted against the purported evils of capitalist globalization, such as inequality, pollution, and financial instability, and as America's high-tech stockmarket boom turned to bust. Yet, in the decade following the end of the Cold War, prospects had looked so rosy, with peace prevailing among the world's great powers, with billions of people joining the world market economy, and with great waves of technological change driving economies forwards.

What to make of such confusion and disappointment? What will the 21st century be like now? Bill Emmott, editor of the world's leading current affairs weekly, The Economist, argues that the best way to think about the future is to look back at the past, at the forces that have shaped our world and at what they tell us about the things that really matter in determining whether we are at peace or at war, in a state of liberty or repression, in a period of prosperity or of depression. From the twentieth century we can learn that two questions matter above all others: Will America continue to lead the world and to protect its peace? And will we continue to accept capitalism, with all its strengths and weaknesses, or will it be challenged once again? Bill Emmott's 20:21 Vision provides the answers that matter for all our lives in the twenty-first century.

From Publishers Weekly
Emmott, who predicted in 1989 that Japan's economic ascent would falter (in The Sun Also Sets), now applies his powers of conjecture again to project how broad historical forces will shape the 21st century, based on an analysis of the 20th. Editor in chief of the Economist, Emmott is a believer in the relative benevolence of American dominance and the relative rewards of unleashed capitalism. The two most important dynamics of the 20th century, he says, were the "United States taking over from Britain" as the protector of global order and capitalism's struggle against its authoritarian antagonists. Emmott believes the most crucial questions for the 21st century are whether America "will continue to keep the peace" and whether "capitalism will survive." Assessing the potential threats to American supremacy-China, Japan, the European Union, terrorism and the precariousness of America's commitment to internationalism-Emmott is cautiously optimistic about America's capacity to continue its leadership role. He is sometimes uncritical in prescribing freer markets as a panacea, but his endorsement of capitalism is carefully qualified. He identifies four flaws threatening its survival: Capitalism is "Unpopular," "Unstable," "Unequal" and "Unclean," in the words of his chapter headings. Despite limited government interventions to correct these dysfunctions, Emmott is hopeful that capitalism can expand its domain in the coming century. It is a wide-ranging and speculative project, and Emmott occasionally floats off into a breezy punditry. But mostly, his arguments are well grounded and his vision of the future is insightful.

From Library Journal
As the Economist's editor in chief contemplates the shift from the prosperous Nineties to today's more sober clime, he asks whether capitalism and America itself will retain their power.

From Booklist
As the abatement of the cold war released international politics and economics to flow in new directions, Emmott observed affairs from one of the most influential posts in journalism: the editorship of the Economist. His book will draw keen attention because of his prognostications about the world's next decades, especially considering trends of the 1990s indicative of danger and instability, including currency collapses, global warming, Islamic terrorism, and Chinese-American friction. Although he cautions readers to remain calm, Emmott elucidates myriad ways the international environment could dramatically deteriorate. However, he also posits that ameliorating trends will be ascendant, provided that America retains global hegemony and capitalism "retains the current, unusual allegiance it commands around the world." Emmott's sly injection of the word unusual underpins his survey of capitalism's twentieth-century history, in which it was accepted (except where abolished) for its bounty but resented for its inherent accentuation of inequality. A sensible, comprehensible package of prophecies. Gilbert Taylor

Past lessons applied to the future.
By Dex Randall Howard
(Note to Amazon: Over a month ago, I wrote the following review. Now and then, would access the title to see if the review had been posted. It had not. Last night, 10 January, I accessed Amazon's page with all my reviews and discovered the review was posted on that page. I returned to the book's page, but my review was not there. So, the review is posted on the page with all my reviews, but not on the review page for the book. Oddly, at least four people have read the view, how did they read it?)
The review title above was stolen from the book's subtitle. Mr. Emmontt's aim is not to predict the future, but to discover in last century's history those forces driving history.
To that end, the first part of the book devotes a chapter each to the histories of the United States, Europe & Russia, China and Japan. It ends with a chapter on world conflict and terror. The second part's chapters look at capitalism from the perspectives of booms & busts, social perceptions, domestic inequality, international inequality and the environment. There is both an introductory and concluding chapter.
Since a few commented on the author's analysis of China, I'll provide what I read him to say:
1.China is not like Imperial Germany, but perhaps more like Imperial Japan in the early decade of the 20th century.
2. Using traditional economic indicators, China is not yet the economic giant some envision. A few examples:
(a) China's share of world merchandise exports is around that of the Netherlands.
(b) China's GDP/person is around that of Sri Lanka.
(c) If purchasing power parity is used, then China's GDP is bigger than Japan's, but behind Thailand's and only 1/4 Korea's.
(d) Direct foregin investment into Japan is around 1/3 of Sweden's and 1/2 of the United Kingdom.
Several of these measures exclude Hong Kong. Some would object, but Hong Kong's numbers can be easily added and should the result significantly change China's position, what would that suggest about China's economic system relative to Hong Kong's?

That said, the author begins by saying, ~ " ...With a population of 1.3 billion, it's natural rank ought again to be as the world's largest economy ... achieved with quite moderate levels of growth, if substained a few decades ... overtaking America as the world's largest economy sometime in the second or third decade of this century ... yet what would be geniunely disturbing would be if China failed to achieve its natural position as the world's largest economy ... for this would almost certainly mean that there had been some sort of economic breakdown, which would probably mean there had been a political breakdown..."
Much of the chapter examines how China's polity and economy interacted in the 20th century since similar pressures will continue into the 21st century.
It's a fine book. Concise and entertaining.

The prognosis of a paranoid optimist
By N. Tsafos
Visions of the future tend to be apocalyptic, whether it be grand geopolitical adjustments, the fear that growth will devastate the environment, or that the Malthusian trap will finally enclose humankind. In fact these types of prophesies make for good reading but, usually, silly predictions. To those who expect to read about the "fall of great powers," "coming anarchies," "clash of civilizations," or "end of histories," (to name a few futuristic bestsellers), Bill Emmott's book will appear rather dull and unimaginative. But it may well turn out to be more accurate than most other looks into the crystal ball.
Broadly speaking, forecasts suffer from two drawbacks: either they focus too much on detail and miss important underlying trends, or they try to conceive of a grand vision and lose touch with reality in the process. Bill Emmott, editor of The Economist since 1993, has tried to overcome these two problems by synthesizing his journalistic attention to detail with his historical instincts that add perspective to his argument. The product is a carefully balanced vision of where the world is headed.
Mr. Emmott believes that two big questions will define the fate of this century: will American hegemony continue and will capitalism survive? For both, he is optimistic. America's main elements of power, he argues, are unaltered-its tolerance of capitalism, its meritocracy and its focus on education. At the same time, potential rivals, for different reasons, are unlikely to take over any time soon. Terrorism, while important, is also unlikely to play a world-altering role in the coming years.
What about capitalism? After the end of the cold war, capitalism's intellectual and political allegiance has grown stronger. This trend is likely to continue, provided that capitalism deals with its biggest challenges-its unpopularity, uncleanness, inequality, and instability. Mr. Emmott goes at great length to show that the capitalist future is not certain-but he also shows with great conviction that most objections to capitalism are unfounded.
Mr. Emmott writes that he looks into the future with the outlook of a paranoid optimist: progress will continue, albeit with setbacks here and there. All too often, books on the future take on a big claim and foresee some radical new world order. A book predicting that the status quo will continue well into this century seems out of place with the futuristic literature. That may disappoint many readers. But that does not mean that Mr. Emmott is not right.

"Twentieth-Century Lessons for the Twenty-first Century"
By Dex Randall Howard
