In addition, the book tackles one of the thorniest problems faced by thread programmers-debugging-with valuable suggestions on how to avoid code errors and performance problems from the outset.

This book is about "threads" and how to use them. "Thread" is just a name for a basic software "thing" that can do work on a computer. A thread is smaller, faster, and more maneuverable than a traditional process. In fact, once threads have been added to an operating system, a "process" becomes just data--address space, files, and so forth--plus one or more threads that do something with all that data.

With threads, you can build applications that utilize system resources more efficiently, that are more friendly to users, that run blazingly fast on multiprocessors, and that may even be easier to maintain. To accomplish all this, you need only add some relatively simple function calls to your code, adjust to a new way of thinking about programming, and leap over a few yawning chasms. Reading this book carefully will, I hope, help you to accomplish all that without losing your sense of humor.

The threads model used in this book is commonly called "Pthreads," or "POSIX threads." Or, more formally (since you haven't yet been properly introduced), the POSIX 1003.1cn1995 standard. I'll give you a few other names later-but for now, "Pthreads" is all you need to worry about.

As I write this, Sun's Solaris, Digital's Digital UNIX, and SGI's IRIX already support Pthreads. The other major commercial UNIX operating systems will soon have Pthreads as well, maybe even by the time you read this, including IBM's AIX and Hewlett-Packard's HP-UX. Pthreads implementations are also available for Linux and other UNIX operating systems.

In the personal computer market, Microsoft's Win32 API (the primary programming interface to both Windows NT and Windows 95) supports threaded programming, as does IBM's OS/2. These threaded programming models are quite different from Pthreads, but the important first step toward using them productively is understanding concurrency, synchronization, and scheduling. The rest is (more or less) a matter of syntax and style, and an experienced thread programmer can adapt to any of these models.

The threaded model can be (and has been) applied with great success to a wide range of programming problems. Here are just a few:

Large scale, computationally intensive programs High-performance application programs and library code that can take advantage of multiprocessor systems Library code that can be used by threaded application programs Realtime application programs and library code Application programs and library code that perform I/O to slow external devices (such as networks and human beings). This book assumes that you are an experienced programmer, familiar with developing code for an operating system in "the UNIX family" using the ANSI C language. I have tried not to assume that you have any experience with threads or other forms of asynchronous programming. The Introduction chapter provides a general overview of the terms and concepts you'll need for the rest of the book. If you don't want to read the Introduction first, that's fine, but if you ever feel like you're "missing something" you might try skipping back to get introduced.

Along the way you'll find examples and simple analogies for everything. In the end I hope that you'll be able to continue comfortably threading along on your own. Have fun, and "happy threading."

About the author

I have been involved in the Pthreads standard since it began, although I stayed at home for the first few meetings. I was finally forced to spend a grueling week in the avalanche-proof concrete bunker at the base of Snowbird ski resort in Utah, watching hard-working standards representatives from around the world wax their skis. This was very distracting, because I had expected a standards meeting to be a formal and stuffy environment. As a result of this misunderstanding, I was forced to rent ski equipment instead of using my own.

After the Pthreads standard went into balloting, I worked on additional thread synchronization interfaces and multiprocessor issues with several POSIX working groups. I also helped to define the Aspen threads extensions, which were fast-tracked into X/Open XSH5.

I have worked at Digital Equipment Corporation for (mumble, mumble) years, in various locations throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire. I was one of the creators of Digital's own threading architecture, and I designed (and implemented much of) the Pthreads interfaces on Digital UNIX 4.0. I have been helping people develop and debug threaded code for more than eight years.

My unofficial motto is "Better Living Through Concurrency." Threads are not sliced bread, but then, we're programmers, not bakers, so we do what we can.

About the Author

David R. Butenhof, a recognized Pthreads authority, was deeply involved in the creation of the IEEE POSIX standard as well as the X/Open threading extensions, which were fast-tracked into X/Open XSH5 (UNIX98). An engineer at Digital Equipment Corporation, he was the lead architect and developer of Digital's own threading architecture and designed and implemented much of the Pthreads interfaces on Digital UNIX 4.0.

Not bad

I found this book very useful when learning about POSIX threads though the whole impression is a bit mixed.
The book gives everything you need to start writing POSIX-style multithreaded applications. Very complicated (in my opinion) issues of multithreading are explained very clearly. Every new concept is immediately illustrated with a sample code.
The appendix contains a detailed description of all mentioned pthread functions, so you can use it as a reference too.
At the same time I am not sure if book is completely up-to-date. E.g., in chapter 7 the author explains in details what is a read/write lock and presents a code with a mutex and 2 condition variables to use as an r/w lock. In the appendix he says that r/w lock can be incorporated into POSIX as a separate entity in future. I work with Solaris 8 and I found that r/w locks are already in my POSIX library.
The style of book is quite special, you may love it, or you may hate it. Sometimes the very basic concepts are explained in such a way and with so repetitions that it becomes even a bit annoying. Those bailing programmers are also a bit annoying. Quotes from Lewis Carroll seem a bit off topic too. Of course it's just my opinion.
In general I think the book worth its money and recommend it to everyone interested in the subject.
Prerequisites are simple: knowledge of C and general POSIX. E.g., I recommend a book by Mr. Gallmeister on real-time (non-multithreading) POSIX.

Basically Good Stuff

Well written, easy to understand. I enjoy reading it thorougly. Only reason it isn't a 5 star is that the font is so freaking large. Come on! My enlish teacher wouldn't let me get away with this kind of stuff... Neither will I.
But, for learning about POSIX threads, this book is nice. Not too technical, not to 'POSIX for Dummies' either...

Detailed and easy to understand

This book is great for beginners in Posix. It is detailed and clear. It gives careful explanation of the major Posix functions and complement them with full source codes which compiles perfectly, making everything easier to understand.

It was 2:41 P.M. Eight miles from his truck, in a deep and narrow slot canyon, Aron was climbing down off a wedged boulder when the rock suddenly, and terrifyingly, came loose. Before he could get out of the way, the falling stone pinned his right hand and wrist against the canyon wall.
And so began six days of hell for Aron Ralston. With scant water and little food, no jacket for the painfully cold nights, and the terrible knowledge that he'd told no one where he was headed, he found himself facing a lingering death -- trapped by an 800-pound boulder 100 feet down in the bottom of a canyon. As he eliminated his escape options one by one through the days, Aron faced the full horror of his predicament: By the time any possible search and rescue effort would begin, he'd most probably have died of dehydration, if a flash flood didn't drown him before that.
What does one do in the face of almost certain death? Using the video camera from his pack, Aron began recording his grateful good-byes to his family and friends all over the country, thinking back over a life filled with adventure, and documenting a last will and testament with the hope that someone would find it. (For their part, his family and friends had instigated a major search for Aron, the amazing details of which are also documented here for the first time.) The knowledge of their love kept Aron Ralston alive, until a divine inspiration on Thursday morning solved the riddle of the boulder. Aron then committed the most extreme act imaginable to save himself.

Ralston's story is one of the most gut-wrenching and compelling real-life adventures in recent years: in early 2003, the avid rock-climber and outdoorsman became trapped in a Utah mountain canyon when an 800-pound boulder pinned his right arm. He spent six days there, fighting both the physical challenges of pain and dehydration, and the psychological horror that eroded his hope and energy. Eventually, he amputated his own arm with his pocket knife in order to gain his freedom. It's a truly remarkable story, and hearing Ralston retell it is alternately fascinating and unbearable. After a brief setup that details his life as an adventurer, he arrives at his moment of horror, walking the listener in painstaking detail through everything he felt and thought; his honest and blunt language (" 'What are you doing, Aron? Get that knife away from your wrist!' I feel vaguely ill... my vision blurs in a nauseating swirl"), paired with his direct and non-sensational delivery, wrap the listener in a mental blanket of claustrophobia. Although squeamish listeners might find this audio presentation too overwhelming, it's a riveting document of one man's extraordinary trial.

Adult/High School - From midday Saturday, April 26, 2003, until midday Thursday, May 1, Ralston was pinned between a boulder and a canyon wall in a remote area of Canyonlands National Park in Utah. He had little food and water. No one would even wonder where he was until he didn't show up for work on Tuesday. Unable to sit, lie down, use his right arm (that was the part between the rock and the wall), or sleep, he knew right away that he was in for an excruciatingly difficult time. Those 120 hours of what he calls "uninterrupted experience" tested to the fullest his physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual being. His eventual rescue led to international headlines, partially due to his dramatic means of escape: he severed his arm with a cheap, dull, dirty knife. This is a searing and amazingly detailed rendition of his ordeal, along with accounts of several of Ralston's previous wilderness adventures. He is one active and tough guy, but readers never get the sense that he is boastful or seeking notoriety. Rather, he seems genuinely intrigued, even mildly befuddled, by his insatiable drive to be active in the wild. One could say he takes too many risks, and that he has a tendency toward carelessness. He himself notes this. But the man's drive and devotion to his calling are nothing but admirable. What makes his account of his ordeal extraordinary, too, is the detail and precision Ralston, a former mechanical engineer, brings to the telling, from the almost minute-by-minute chronology of his ordeal to topographical descriptions of the ground he's covered in his life as an outdoor adventurer. It's also the extremes of failure and achievement we see forged in this life-or-death crisis: carelessness at not telling friends where he was going, despair as he wrote his epitaph on the canyon wall, even a certain unthinking in taking five days to figure out his deliverance. But those were all trumped by Ralston's amazing resourcefulness in prolonging his supplies and finding a way out, his boundless enthusiasm for life, and his dogged force of will at enduring far longer than anyone could have expected. Compelling, riveting tale of survival and human strength

I agree with the last reviewer. The fact that Aron Ralston used poor judgment, i.e. hiking alone and not telling anyone where he was, only makes his story more compelling. Hasn't everyone made a huge mistake that leads to a painful, regretful plight?

Calling the media sensationalistic,in this instance, is just plain silly--amputing one's arm in order to save one's life IS a sensational, highly unusual event. I don't think the media or Aron is making it anything more than what it was. The charge that Aron is self-promoting is just as ridiculous. After you read the book, you will see that Ralston is a humble person with great integrity and strength. He is simply telling his own, true, unbelievable story. Bottomline, this book is incredibly well-written, moving and not to be missed.

one of the best books i've read.

I'm not sure who these reviewers are who have such pity for Aron Ralston, or who think he's a "dumbf--k" for his risk-taking, or who think he hasnt learned something of crucial importance from his experience at Blue John Canyon. Either they missed the point of this incredible story, or I did. Given how deeply this book touched me, I'd say it's a safe bet that it wasnt me that missed the point.

The story of his saga in the canyon is retold in this book in often excruciating detail, to the point where I sometimes found my hands clenching, my heart pounding, my eyes welling with tears as he reminisced, hallucinated, struggled with things that seem to me the very core of being human - in particular, discovering a greater appreciation for the people we love.

I would recommend this book to all but maybe the most squeamish of individuals, and even then I would suggest sucking it up and reading it anyway. This story is inspiring in so many ways. Totally worth reading.

Aron, if you're reading these reviews....thank you. Your suffering was not in vain, my friend. And i thank you for sharing it with all of us.

follow your bliss

This is a wonderful book by a clearly remarkable individual. Ralston successfully intertwines prior experiences with his accident in Utah, to give the reader tremendous insight into the many wilderness experiences that shaped him.

At times, the book gives fairly detailed technical renderings of mountaineering experiences, and these passages can be difficult. However, these sections can be easily 'skimmed through' by the non-mountaineer, and most probably savored by those with more hiking/climbing experience.

What makes this book valuable to every reader, including ones who may never face seemingly insurmountable physical challenges, is Ralston's -Joseph Campbell inspired- message of "follow your bliss." It will be the unusual reader who does not finish this book feeling as if they must closely examine their own life, and the course it is taking.

Live Like A Millionaire is short but contained amazing point of views. It is straight to the point, easy-to-read, easy-to-understand and motivating. The pointers were simple but gave a great impact, these are the things that some of us probably overlook because we are so used to doing what we are doing when it comes to money or fear that we might lose a lot if we let it roll. This book would prove that there are money habits that we have which are not really giving us any good benefits and that we can do something about it, and that would lead us to becoming financially successful. Who does not want to be a millionaire? Everyone should read this book. Awesome read!

Great read and very insightful

This book helped me to get into the mind frame of what it's like to actually be a millionaire. I feel like I can now visualize the steps I need to take and attitude I need to become one myself. I'm not saying it's going to be overnight, but this book definitely sets you up with ways you can start taking easy steps in the right direction to becoming rich!

This book has been mis-titled, a far more suitable title would have been "How to have a millionaire mindset.". As a result there is precious little "how too" and quite a bit of "this how a millionaire would look at it"

Carol A. R. Andrews served as Assistant Keeper/Senior Research Assistant in the Department of Egyptian Antiquities at the British Museum from 1971 to 2000.

Excellent Revisions in this Spectacular 20th Anniversary Edition

The Book of Going Forth by Day was first published in 1994 and revised in 1998. This twentieth anniversary edition includes several important new features and twenty new pages.

The first addition is an essay by Egyptological scholar J. Daniel Gunther, who presents an overview of the history of academic research in Egyptian religion and philology during the past two hundred years. The decipherment of the Rosetta Stone in the 1820s began to open the mysteries of ancient Egypt to a world hungry for understanding. Gunther has brought to life some of the trials and passions of scholars who dared journey into a territory that had been wrapped in darkness for millennia.

The second is a critical contribution by Dr. Ogden Goelet, who supervised the original publication; he has compiled an annotated bibliography that replaces and expands upon his twenty-year-old original. It is a state-of-the-art survey of academic sources, especially those created in the past two decades. Dr. Goelet has divided the bibliographical materials into separate categories that include: general studies of Egyptian Afterlife literature; Book of the Dead studies and bibliographies; production techniques of Book of the Dead manuscripts; comprehensive commentaries and translations; suggestions for a program of self-study for the interested amateur; and a selection of online resources. Each section is preceded by a brief introduction that explains its parameters.

The third is a series of improvements to the color images of the Papyrus itself. Some of these were done with reference to the 1979 portfolio of photographs from the British Museum. Other adjustments to the presentation of the scroll were noted during the electronic conversion from its 1993 manual format. All are detailed in a new introduction by James Wasserman, who also discusses the continuing contemporary relevance of ancient Egypt in Western culture.

Here is a list of changes made to the Plates of the Twentieth Anniversary Edition:

Nancy Wasserman restored two small wadjet-eyes on the Djed pillar between Isis and Nepthys on Plate 1b;

She added Thoth's reed pen on Plates 3b and 31b

The tree goddess on Plate 16a has been made more visible

Another tiny wadjet-eye has been returned to the prow of the solar bark on Plate 18a

Ani and Tutu's headbands were enhanced on Plate 19a; and the third color of the multicolored mound below the swallow was highlighted on Plate 25a.

In addition, our presentation of the Papyrus has been improved by rejoining the hieroglyphs across the gutter at the top of the page for the names of Geb on Plates 3a and 3b, and Iakedked on Plates 9a and 9b. Very minor aesthetic adjustments were made to Plates 5b and 6a, 7b and 8a, and 8b and 9a.

For ease of reference, we added a and b designations to the numbering of the Papyrus plates.

Superb new edition!

What a great book! This is the most advanced version yet of this groundbreaking publication of The Egyptian Book of the Dead: The Book of Going Forth by Day. Dr. Ogden Goelet's Annotated Select Bibliography and Study Guide runs for seven pages and includes the best sources for a program of self-study for the interested reader and his thoughts on each volume listed. J. Daniel Gunther's history of Egyptology makes abundantly clear how young a science Egyptology really is. Before the discovery of the Rosetta Stone in 1799 everything posited about the meaning of Egyptian hieroglyphics was pure speculation, and often spectacularly inaccurate! The introduction by James Wasserman highlights the continuing impact of Egypt in modern Western culture, the history of Egypt's fascination since the days of Pythagoras in the sixth century BC, an explanation of the improvements to the Papyrus art made for this edition, and a word on the importance of this book to modern Egyptology during the last 20 years.

Very large book

It's a beautiful book, the only issue I have with it (which is totally my own fault for not bothering to look at the dimensions) is that it's huge in size. Not thickness, but it's 9.5x14 (If I could find my ruler I would double check it, because I could swear it's even larger than that). There's no way it will fit on my bookshelf, one of my friends commented "This isn't a book, it's a tome!" I will end up having to lay it down on my bookshelf and put other books on top just so I can put it somewhere. But since the dimensions are clearly listed in the product details, I won't deduct a star. It really is my own fault.
Moving right along...
The artwork is beautiful, the pages are beautiful. It's really an impressive and gorgeous book and some pages even fold out. As if the hieroglyphics were too valuable to split up for another page, so they just made a larger page and folded it inward. Pretty clever. It's definitely worth the money you pay for it, but just be cautious...it is a very large book and won't fit on a standard bookshelf.
I will probably end up buying another version, one that DOES fit on my shelf better, so that I can easily grab and go. This isn't a book you can take with you anywhere and read at your leisure, which is what I want in my books. Portability.
