Very useful information!

Mental illness is more common than you can imagine. I read this book because I want to know how to help a friend who is suffering from mental illness. She often refuses to take her medicine. This book helped me understand her better and gave me some great tools to help her. I use the tips from this book to explain to her how important is medication management for her well-being.

This book points out that though medication is not a cure, it can relieve the symptoms that normally overwhelmed the individual. I highly recommend this booklet to counselors and patients.

Probably the best book about the history of gaming

Of all the things that was wonderful about this book, for all that's said about the video game industry being so young. there's tons of history and changes that didn't happen overnight. From the 50s to now, it was fascinating to see how most of video games started from the idea of fun and play. It never started with one person, but it was amazing to read about those 'one person' people who made big imprints to the industry we know and whine about today! I was able to learn about the video game craze in 1980s Europe and discovering a huge chunk of that history goes woefully unreported and barely register a blips. It was nice to know that it wasn't 'all Nintendo, all the time'.

Nearly every sector gets a writeup that comes from a writer who gives it the utmost respect the people and their creations deserve. Consoles, PCs, handhelds, smartphones, arcades, indies, big publishers, DLC, free to play: for as brief (it's in the title) as the coverage a lot of these sectors get, they hold a bunch of impact and may even jog some warm memories about those days.

Coming at a time when the industry has lost one of its biggest icons (Satoru Iwata), it was great not to just remember the works we have been giving, but the people who helped shaped it and make it happen.

Ok, but better options available

Not really a "history," more a summary of video gaming's past highlights written in a weird train-of-thought style, with lots of editorializing from the author. Caught a few factual errors, and the book doesn't seem to know what it wants to be. Bad layout/graphic design, areas of the page too dense right next to a bunch of wasted blank space. There are far better options for purchase here on Amazon.

Printed so small and terribly tight margins - impossible to read.

This review isn't about the content - its about the way the book is published. Its small pages with small type and fairly thick. The type runs so close to the inside margins that you have to pry the book apart and still cant comfortably read it. While the subject and the writing seem to be reasonable from what I can read - its too uncomfortable to even try to read the rest.

About the Author

Joseph Mehr has been involved with the Human Services field virtually since its inception.  In the 1960s he developed an NIMH Paraprofessional Manpower and Training grant which funded the development of a Human Service career series for the state of Illinois. In the 1970s he wrote, and obtained a U.S. Foundation for Higher Education grant to integrate Mental Health system training programs with the college and University systems, allowing many human service workers to acquire college credit for their ongoing employment training. He is a Clinical Psychologist with years of college teaching experience in Psychology and in Human Services, and has written well regarded college texts for both fields. In the late 1970s he wrote one of the first college level introductory texts in the field of Human Services.  In 2001 he retired from his full time work, and currently is actively engaged in clinical consultation.

Ronald Kanwischer is currently an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at SIU School of Medicine.  He serves as the Outpatient Residency Services Coordinator, Director of Continuing Education for the Department of Psychiatry, as well as a psychotherapist and teacher.  He has over twenty-seven years of experience in the fields of substance abuse and mental health.  Mr. Kanwischer consults to a variety of service systems on clinical and client motivational issues including the Illinois Department of Human Services, community agencies, and the Criminal Justice system.  He is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, and teaches Motivational Interviewing in workshops and on an individual basis.

It's time to retire this text, rather than publish "new" editions with updated insert boxes.

I have been teaching Human Services for many years. I inherited this text when another faculty resigned after the deadline for textbook orders for this semester. I have a number of concerns about using this book in the Human Services field. Among them is the authors' tendency to use outdated references to "alcoholics," "the mentally retarded," etc, instead of using the preferred and more respectful "person first language." They focus on "problems" more than "strengths" in regard to "clients." They write as thought the Human Services professional is a "nonprofessional" worker, although this is no longer true. Human Services is an umbrella term which includes all helping professions. They emphasize the use of behaviorism for people with cognitive disabilities, even though it has been amply demonstrated by good research that behavioral programs are not effective when used in working with people who have Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and other brain based disorders, as the relationship between cause and effect is understood differently by those persons. They rely on Freudian terms no longer in widespread use, and do not seem to realize that Jungian modalities are more pervasive in today's helping professions. In short, I believe it is time to retire this text. There are far better introductory Human Services textbooks available.

So, you're thinking - you kind of like watches, but not sure if you want to read a book all about a single watch. Have no fear! This book covers the rise of the Breguet watch company, and the watches Breguet created. It also serves as a parallel for the growth of the watch industry as a whole. Ok, what if you're not into history? Well, this is not a dry, dusty history book. Biggs' brings it to life, bringing a novelist's touch to the story as whole. On top of all that, this is really a story about passion - passion that fueled the commission, passion that was displayed by the watch maker, and then the passion that drove the the thief to his brazen theft.

In other words, if you have even a passing interest in the history of watches - let alone one of the most important examples from the past - this is a book you should be checking out.

This is a masterful writing effort. I can only imagine the research that went into it. The writing is superb. Biggs intertwines the history of watchmaking with historical events of the 1700's up to more recent times.. The story is spiced with a touching romance revealed through the life of Marie Antoinette who was married off young to the French King and eventually discovered the love of her life. Intrigue is introduced through scheming thieves. Biggs gets into their heads in a way that is fascinating. Whatever inspired Biggs to write a book of such detail about watches and their creators is puzzling, but he tamed the task. A creative, resolute composer and a master of the craft of writing, he delivers an exceptional historical account on a rare topic.

A nice overview of a complex art

A good book for someone with no bonsai experience. The authors keep the basics of bonsai simple and point the novice in the right direction. Although it would be a good reference to have handy while attempting that first Juniper, the beginner would do well to read other books before going further.

An in-depth overview of KM fundamentals

Organizations are becoming awash with information flows and knowledge assets, and understanding and applying KM principles is becoming an increasing competitive imperative for companies around the world. This KM book provides a useful conceptual introduction to KM strategy, based on research carried out at leading U.S. and European companies.
The primary audience for the book is managers involved in KM practices, and MBA students. The material is divided into 10 chapters, covering KM models, processes, planning, learning, technology infrastructure and measurement.
The book includes a modest two-page list of references and a very useful ten-page questionnaire for assessing KM aptitude in an organization, covering issues like staff awareness, KM commitment, IT infrastructure, business culture, and KM measurement.
The book is based on research carried out in 1999 and 2000 by a University of Surrey project. The material is peppered with sidebars containing actual quotes from strategists and managers at 28 U.S. and European companies like HP, Andersen, Swiss Re, Barclays Bank, Cap Gemini, Siemens, AstraZeneca, Reckitt&Coleman, BP Amoco, KPMG, Buckman Labs, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Rolls-Royce, Nokia, Cable&Wireless, NatWest, Procter&Gamble, Ericsson and PowerGen.
"KM has come to the fore over the last 8-10 years, progressively brought into centre-stage, driven by the networked economy through increased competition, mergers and acquisitions, and the all-invasive Internet. The net result of all this has been a far greater dynamism in the economy as a whole. People have greater access to information than they ever had before. There is a huge potential for learning at an accelerated pace, for change at an accelerated pace. What this has led to is a need to have a far more responsive organization," the authors begin.
Still, the authors caution that KM need not be a guarantee of success or survival, though it can certainly improve the odds. There is also the possibility that without proper planning, users may merely become `information rich but knowledge poor.'
The authors draw up numerous taxonomies of knowledge, such as tacit/explicit, embodied/embedded/represented, individual/institutional, static/dynamic, declarative/procedural, routine/non-routine, team-specific/strategic. KM can also extend outside organizational domains to suppliers and distributors, via alliance knowledge; cultural alignment and trust are key pre-requisites for such transfers.
Contextually, KM is more organic and humanistic as compared to the various business strategy paradigms of the last few decades, such as portfolio management, sensitivity training, core competencies, TQM, and BPR.
The human factor was underestimated in BPR, whose focus on process efficiencies often ignored opportunities for knowledge exchange among employees and with customers. One of the major shortcomings of TQM and QC philosophy was its narrow focus on problem solving, and not other corporate issues.
McKinsey classifies KM buying behaviours into five kinds: conservative adopters (with basic KM functionality for cost savings), fast followers (deep KM functionality in a few critical processes), solution buyers (who prefer all-in-one solutions), self-sufficient integrators (market leaders), and business design innovators (driven by visionary leaders).
KPMG identifies five stages in the maturity of KM culture and adoption in a company: knowledge chaotic (no structured KM approach), knowledge aware (basic cataloguing available), knowledge enabled (standardized processes implemented), knowledge managed (integrated KM culture, CKO), and knowledge centric (daily assessment and improvement of knowledge environment).
From a KM practice perspective, Sveiby categorises four modes of knowledge conversion: embodied to embodied knowledge (sharing experiences and mental models, eg. apprenticeship), embodied to represented (eg. cookery books), represented to represented (eg. formal education, corporate universities), and represented to embodied (internalization).
Hansen, Nohria and Tuerney identify two kinds of KM strategies: codification (re-use of knowledge bases) and personalization (encouraging people-to-people networking and mentoring).
A key foundation of KM is nurturing and harnessing communities of practice, where knowledge is put into action. Useful tools here include organizational network analysis (ONA), based on employee answers to a wide range of questions about the conversations they normally indulge in at the workplace and outside. The output is the cross-functional sociogram, which can help identify key knowledge flows in an organization.
Expertise directories and glossaries, knowledge coordinators, network events, online collaboration spaces, and storytelling of illustrative anecdotes are important roles and processes here.
One chapter covers the KM matrix, a useful table with knowledge types on one axis (embedded, embodied, represented) and knowledge processes on the other (sense, organize, socialize, internalize). Accordingly, there are numerous KM activities (and enabling technologies) that arise, such as datamining, knowledge surveys, knowledge taxonomisation, groupware, e-learning, and workflow analysis.
Some obstacles that may arise here include differing learning styles among employees, a `hoarding mentality,' and work-related cultural differences (particularly for global organizations) related to power, individualism, gender, and ability to cope with ambiguity.
On the technology front, content management is a major factor in the more efficient management of knowledge. Version control, document cross-referencing, library systems, security, bandwidth, interactivity and reusability are key considerations here.
At the end of the day, measures for evaluating KM programmes will have to be applied, but the issues surrounding such intangible assets are not easily resolved. Assessing intellectual capital can cover not just financial returns but also customer satisfaction, employee profiles, business processes, and performance trends (i.e. human, structural and customer capital).
Many of these perspectives and principles are based on the numerous examples cited throughout the book.
"The main objective of KM is to arrange, orchestrate, and organize an environment in which people are invited and facilitated to apply, develop, share, combine and consolidate knowledge," the authors conclude.

Better than most!

I currently own over 25 chemistry demonstration books so I definitely can say with confidence that this is one book you need to own. The reason I purchase so many demo books is because I can't seem to find one that doesn't cost an arm and a leg for the needed supplies and equipment, or have a large danger factor. In one book I own, for example, it would cost me over 100 dollars for the supplies to do just one demo, plus all the prep time. I was able to use this book from the first day it arrived. Most of the demos I have seen in it so far have been easy, basic and cost effective. They are well written with easy to understand instructions. Most of the ones I have read dont require a hood or safety shield, (although I have not yet finished perusing the book.) I teach in a school with a very limited budet and few lab supplies so I was very excited with these demos. The chemicals involved are very standard ones that most schools already have in their chemical closets. I teach standard high school chemistry, and although I have not done a demo from the book with a super WOW factor yet, I am happy that the ones I have used so far have captured the interest of my students and generated several discussions. I am definitely going to buy the first volume as well. This has become my economical, quick, and easy to understand go-to book for the semester.
