The book is good, but the class is better!!

This good is very complex for somebody that, like me, doesn't have a economics background. The math is quite simple (I'm an engineer, so my math is very good), but you need a lot of concepts and definitions from economics that you only get in regular courses of microeconomics and econometrics.

If you are not an economists and have never taken an microeconomics course, start with Varian's microeconomics book...

Other than that, I'd really recommend you to take his course at UCI if you can... His classes are great, although he only teaches once every 3 or so years...

Comprehensive and updated, a must have for the serious practitioners

This is a college textbook any serious transportation planner, economist and engineer must have in its library. Comprehensive and up to date. As an example, the chapter on pricing includes not only the Singapore case, but also the latest implementations of congestion pricing, including London, Norway, and Stockholm, and also a discussion of the technologies used for practical implementation of road pricing.

Though the economic impact valuation of climate change is just briefly discussed, it caught my attention that as good economists the authors had the courage of being politically incorrect by saying openly that "...precise prediction of effects of carbon dioxide on climate is impossible" (see page 105), but don't get confused, they are not deniers, the subject is objectively discussed within the context of environmental externalities caused by automobiles in urban areas.

The Soul rules!

The world is so messed up (greatly because of religions) that I was feeling really depressed thinking there is no solution for all the horrible things going on now a days: war, economic distress, hunger, you name it!
I read Bob Emerick's book and the first thing I felt was hope. And that hope does not lay in some religious guru or spiritual guide but inside each and one of us. If could all just affirm our soul and let it rule our lives, our communities and finally the whole world would really, I mean, really be a better place.

The reality and importance of the Soul

I tend to avoid "self-help" books. While the cover design of "Soul Affirmation" resembles the stereotypical self-help book, this book is not so much about the Self helping us as the Soul doing so -- big difference. Although my copy does not bear the subtitle "Introduction to the Philosophy of Life," as indicated on Amazon, the book does in fact contain a profound and practical philosophy of life. It is also a radical re-evaluation of religion and particularly the Christian religion, which emphasizes the Garden of Eden story in the Bible at the expense of the first account of Creation and humanity's role within it in Genesis chapter one -- to disastrous personal and historical effect. I have extensive theological education, but never have I heard such a clear and compelling explanation of Christian theology combined with psychological and social understanding. Moreover, Rev. Robert Emerick consistently develops his understanding further, including in the field of current economic well-being, every Sunday at Bay Ridge United Methodist Church in Brooklyn, NY. Although I do not belong to his church, I attend the Sunday services there as often as I can to hear his most excellent and interesting sermons.

Inspirations Created by Soul Affirmation

Soul Affirmation is an illuminating and inspiring book that affects the human spirit and creates a sense of hope and positive spirituality in the readers. It touches on important idealogies found in religion, anthropology, and psychology. The way in which these ideas interface is very interesting and challenging; and I found myself revisiting some concepts I knew, but learning so many new ones.

I can honestly say that Soul Affirmation contributed to my own "journey into awakening" and Robert Emerick continues to challenge and uplift us with this book that shows us that we can walk with "courage and confidence."

I highly recommend Soul Affirmation to all those interested in exploring meaningful concepts that touch upon the spiritual, emotional, and mental parts of our being. Again, Robert Emerick writes a gem of a book and will continue to inspire his readers to be more aware of the "soul."

Good green fun

Mallory takes her elementary school's mission to go green seriously--maybe a little too seriously as she soon alienates her classmates, friends, and family. She learns that if she really wants to help others to go green, she will have to work with them rather than tell them what they must do. Fun, easy chapter book with a good message for 2nd to 4th graders.

Mallory Goes Green! is a new addition to the Mallory series. Mallory McDonald is super-excited to be an official member of the Fern Falls Elementary Environmental Committee and is ready to make both her school and her home more environmentally friendly. She is even elected as her class representative for the all-school "Green Fair." But when Mallory goes green, everything goes wrong. The kids in her class don't want to participate in the Green Fair project she created. In fact, by the day of the Green Fair, Mallory has managed to upset even her two best friends with her "Green Police" tactics. Mallory must find a way to save not only the planet but her friendships as well.

Dedicated "Mallory" fans will enjoy this new addition to the series, and new fans will love it too! Mallory Goes Green! is illustrated by Jennifer Kalis. every kid can learn to read

The Blue book and Gold book (headway program) were a popular curriculum in the 70s and 80s. It taught phonics. By returning to past curriculum(s) that worked, we can go back to all kids learning to read. I use four books to bring kids up to high school level. The Blue and Gold books headway program, breaking the code (based on Blue and Gold book style) takes the kid to 5th grade level, then finish with Rewards by Sopris West which takes the kid to 10th grade level with speed and proficiency. Four books to move from total non-reader to proficient high school level. Not only amazing...but repeatable.

Breaking the Code and Rewards have newer editions but I am not sure if they are as good as the original.

Rewards at sopris west has updated to a range of books but I have not tried them.

These are the four books I use. One hour per day takes about 4 weeks per book: 16 weeks to proficient readers.
In a Saturday moring program, you can do 4 chapters. It would take between 5 and 6 Saturdays for each book.
I have taken many 12th grade (even special ed) nonreaders through these programs. It works.

The headway program is no longer in print, and even used books are not to be found.
The copyright has expired.

I wish open court or some other publisher would reprint these, but until then use the online copy.

THE book for high end aducation

We are fortunate that old teacher told us about this book. This book was published before American education system lowered the standard... last two times. My 5 y.o. son actually reading NEW and unknown words mostly correctly being though just 1st half of it.
In addition to the book we re-write each new word from the book 5 times, and write a sentence with it.

Talented Writers Can't Quit

Kept Women Can't Quit, by A A Fair (Erle Stanley Gardner)

The 'Foreword' is dedicated to Preston G. Smith, Warden at the Federal Correctional Institution at Terminal Island California, and has some advice and wisdom on rehabilitating convicts. Gardner says a vindictive punishment is bad because it doesn't rehabilitate prison inmates and leads them to continue the mental attitude that put them in jail. Warden Preston G. Smith tried to provide the fundamentals, vocational and academic training, counseling, etc. Has anything changed over the last fifty years?

The opening chapter tells of a stealth theft from an armored car that was only discovered when the money went missing after the driver and guard stopped for coffee and doughnuts. The "Cool & Lam" agency gets a visit from Detective Sergeant Sellers because their name and number was found on a piece of paper in a suspect's possession - the alleged girlfriend of a criminal found with half the loot. The police think this money was ordered by a big bookmaker. This girlfriend, Hazel Downer, visits Donald Lam to find her missing husband, and the money she inherited. Coincidentally, this money matches the amount missing in the robbery! [Note how the author builds a complicated case while lightly touching on various human errors.] Chapter 2 gives a quick introduction to the public relations racket and its use in merchandising. Donald Lam follows the clues he discovers. A duplicate trunk is shipped to San Francisco, and Lam follows. Lam meets Hazel and goes for a ride. Their meeting is interrupted by Sergeant Sellers. How will Donald Lam get out of this mess?

Gardner used this pen-name to provide another outlet for his creative talents. This story demonstrates Gardner's skill as a writer of detective stories. Using a continuing series about a fictional person creates a brand and a market for this type of novel. Examples are A. Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, Ian Fleming, Patricia Cornwell, and others.

$50,000 Worth of Trouble

Sgt. Sellers has a bone to pick with Donald Lam even before the case begins. It seems an armored car robbery netted a robber $100,000, but Sellers only recovered $50,000 of it. The crook claims Sellers took the rest of it. His clues led him to a woman who had the address of Cool and Lam in her purse. Donald had never heard of her before, and tells Sellers that - but while in conference the woman in question shows up.
Meeting her in secret, he learns she wants him to track down $60,000 she claims her ex-boy-friend was going to settle with her on. It's a case Donald doesn't like, but agrees to take.
Donald finds $50,000 without much trouble, and even figures out a way to ship it back to his office without detection, but then finds himself in the middle of a murder case - and worse still, the $50,000 disappeared somewhere along the way. It takes all of his skill to figure out the clues while still being detained by the police - and held under "protective custody" in a hotel room.

Convoluted caper.

Kept Women Can't Quit contains plenty of typical Cool and Lam fare. Narrated by the diminutive PI, Donald Lam, this is a fast paced crime novel that revolves around two different but ultimately related crimes....an armoured car heist in Los Angeles and a fatal stabbing in San Francisco. Playing important roles are two seductive dames Hazel Downer and Evelyn Ellis, both of them rivals for the affection and fat bankroll of the same crooked guy.
The plot is highly convoluted. Some passages make for interesting reading but a number of others are quite tedious because of the amount of detail author Erle Stanley Gardner insists on cramming in.
Fast paced, interesting in places, but ultimately a rather mediocre read.

World history from a global perspective

This is the third volume in the History of Humanity series, covering a time period from 700 BCE to 700 CE with a truly global geographical span. It is primarily a reference work, but it can well be read from cover to cover also by those who have a serious interest in world history.

History of Humanity is superior to standard accounts of world history because it gives just as much space to peripheral regions as to classical civilizations. You can easily find better (and much more detailed) accounts of ancient Greece, Rome, India and China in standard works on world history. But I don't know of any other work which, side by side with the classical cultures, includes extensive contributions on peripheral topics such as the Arabian peninsula before Islam (ch 9), the nomadic cultures of central Asia (ch 23) or the formation of the classical Andean world (ch 30.1). As these examples illustrate, in History of Humanity world history extends far beyond the borders of the familiar "high" civilizations.

In general, the quality of contributions in History of Humanity is high and the editors have formed a very readable collection. For persons interested in studying human history from the broadest possible perspective, this collection is therefore likely to be the best available source for the coming 20-30 years until we can, hopefully, expect a new and updated edition.
