About the Author
Mark Lane is an author, lawyer and activist. His was the first voice to publicly question the top secret investigation into the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and his bestselling book, Rush to Judgment, was one of the first to question the Warren Commission's conclusion that Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone assassin. A Citizen's Dissent recounts the vast efforts of our government and the establishment media to suppress his investigation into the assassination of JFK and to silence and destroy him for his work. His later works on the JFK assassination detailed the involvement of the CIA through an actual trial in which Lane cross-examined multiple agents [Plausible Denial] and the role played by the CIA and Secret Service [Last Word]. He crossed the country speaking at countless colleges and other institutions about the murder of the president sparking the creation of the House Select Committee on Assassinations, which looked into the assassinations of Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A Freedom Rider while he served in the New York Legislature in 1961, he has defended the rights of the voiceless from his beginnings in East Harlem to Wounded Knee, where he successfully defended the leaders of the American Indian Movement. He freed James Joseph Richardson, a black man framed in rural Florida for the murder of his own seven children, from prison after serving over 20 years, many of them on death row [Arcadia]. He is a survivor of Jonestown [The Strongest Poison] and was a leader of the anti-war movement during the Viet Nam era [Chicago Eyewitness; Conversations with Americans], Lane's autobiography, Citizen Lane, was published in 2012.

Murder in Memphis

As it is a particular field of interest to me, I have probably read more about the trilogy of 1960's assassinations than most. Most conspiracy theories, however, involve a certain suspension of disbelief, and the reader, as investigator, must decide what they believe or not. Not so in Mark Lane and Dick Gregory's Murder in Memphis; without pointedly trying to be, their simple stating of the facts is the single most damning, disturbing, and convincing indictment of the FBI and others involved that I have ever read. Brilliantly written, the book is also meticulously researched; every source used is clearly identified and the reader gets the impression they could independently verify every statement made with relative ease. A non-stop page-turner from beginning to end; it is a must read for anyone who enjoys non-fiction.

Republished in the 1990's by Mark Lane and Dick Gregory as "Murder in Memphis," this book blows the dust off of another chapter in American Mythology - that James Earl Ray assassinated Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr in Memphis on April 4, 1968. While this is still mind-bogglingly accepted by most citizens today, few understand that as a result of Mark Lane's efforts, Dr. King's family came to the conclusion that it was not Ray that killed one of the most prominent leaders of the American 20th century. Rather, they understand it to be the result of a conspiracy involving government agents and other clandestine groups.

Lane spells out the facts from the case, setting up an excellent defense for Ray. This supposed assassin was on the run as a fugitive after escaping from prison in Missouri. As such, he wound up in Canada, and in order to make money he put himself in the services of anyone that needed odd jobs performed. Ray subsequently got involved with a man he calls "Raoul," who put him on the payroll and had him do several jobs like smuggling drugs across the border, etc. After a while, Ray ended up in Memphis, unwittingly being cast as a dupe in a grand scheme to kill Dr. King. Lane effectively shows how witnesses were intimidated into giving false information or retracting their stories. The author also painstakingly details how the State's case against Ray was feeble, and would have been blown apart in court had Ray not been squeezed into entering a plea of guilty.

Four stars, not 5, due to the chapters from Dick Gregory. If this book is ever reprinted, Gregory's part could be condensed into one or two chapters. He gives some interesting anecdotal information, such as that Ralph Abernathy called Dr. King by his given name, Michael; as well as little snippets of instances when the FBI would come to a black family's house after receiving a complaint about harassment, and simply warm their hands in the burning crosses before taking fingerprints of the victims and then going along their way. However, when he includes things like mentioning the TV show "Lassie" received a lot of hate mail from black folks because of its star dog being given a lot of screen time when dogs were being used to maul civil rights protesters, the reader might just roll their eyes. I have a feeling that these parts were inserted to take up space and fill the book out.

Regardless, this book is highly recommended. The killing of Dr. King is the kind of event that future generations and historians will look at and wonder in awe at the gullibility of the American people and the effectiveness of the "memory hole." Would that copies of this book, and others like Dr. William Pepper's Orders to Kill: The Truth Behind the Murder of Martin Luther King, Jr. (Warner Books) be distributed to every citizen that visits Dr. King's Memorial in DC.

Not as good as orders to kill

This is a fairly good book but nothing like Orders to Kill by William Pepper which is much more detailed and conclusive in it's arguments. Thinking about it I guess these guys probably re-released to cash in on the time, effort and money that Pepper spent on the the case. Still it is much better than Posner so...

In addition, it does have a few astrological references in the context of the presented mythology or history. It is so sad that this book has drawn so many people down a path so far from truth. The fact is that ancient Hawaiian religion has no resemblance to Christianity what-so-ever. Just as in the case of Native American peoples on the mainland, wannabe's have twisted the ancient beliefs to what they want them to be in order to profit from them. The so called religion that this book touts never was. It's a shame that the wonderful stories from the past have been so sadly represented. The Hawaiian people deserve better. This book is a waste of time as anyone that has actually studied ancient Hawaii can tell you.

Children of the Rainbow, farce

I am a 6th generation Polynesian and it saddens me that this kind of publication has reached so many folks who lap up the New Age mumbo-jumbo without questioning the authenticity of the author.

First off, I believe that this book was written by Max Freedom Long, creator of the "Huna" cult. The name "Leinani Melville" is an obvious smokescreen. Leinani, or beautiful wreath, coupled with Melville, as in Herman, author of Typee, Oomo, and Mardi, among others. There is no information out there regarding Leinani Melville, as a person, other than the name that is on this book. I believe that Long concocted this story in order to validate his 'research' on Hawaiian religious practices. This research, ultimately created the Huna belief system.

There are so many things wrong with this book, I don't know where to begin.

The author's account of how this information was obtained is clearly suspect.

On page v, the first page of the book, he states that, "Much of the information that follows was learned from an elderly Hawaiian lady, a native fisherwoman, who taught me concerning major gods of the Polynesian nation and their relationship with each other, with earth, and with man."

Then, 3 pages later, he claims that his teachings stemmed from a conversation that he had with his ailing grandmother, one Mary Julia Glennie Bush, who tells him, "My last wish is that you write the book your grandfather was unable to write." According to the author, his grandmother/father were both privy to the 'secret' information of the great Hawaiian priests. If what he states is true, that would make his grandfather John Edward Bush, politician in the early Hawaiian government and whaler. I doubt that MJGB was even native born, and I find it ironic that on her headstone, the surname, Bush, is left out.

Next, the author clearly writes with and interprets words through either a British, or East Coast filter. His addition of the letter 'r' to words that end in 'a', such as Tane, pronounced, 'tah-nay', is incorrectly glossed as 'tar-nay'.

He also states that Huna is an ancient Hawaiian religion, which it is not, nor has ever been. I won't get into the author's mention of the great continent of Hawai'i which he claims connected Asia with North and South America, that sank thus creating Polynesia and modern day Hawai'i. He is clearly referencing the super continent, Pangea and claiming that Pangea was originally known as Hawai'i. This gigantic island was populated by a race known as, Mu. His belief was that all man sprang forth the 'Mu', a diminutive breed of people that eventually populated the entire world.

Nor will I speak of his assertion that ancient Hawaiians came from Egypt via the constellation Pleiades or worshiped 'God' before any other race. He casually mixes Christianity with the pantheon of Hawaiian deities, taking fundamental Polynesian beliefs and turning them inside out to fit into his anglocentric fantasy.

The author is tricky in that he mixes in some fact with the fiction, so that unless you are well acquainted with the complexities of how early Hawaiian society worked, or the subsequent Hawaiian monarchy, you could easily be duped into believing this garbage.

This is obviously one of the first New Age books created, back in the 1930's, and the authors profound lack of understanding of the peoples and customs of Polynesia is shameful.

Anyone that reads this book and finds anything other than pure fiction, should have their head examined. This is really just another example of the Anglo culture vulture feasting on the bones of ignorance.

Good book with lots of relevant information

There is very little information on Yakushima in english and this book certainly explains everything you'll need to know about the island. I recently visited Yakshima for 5 days this past may and used this book for the majority of my information. I even used the information in this book to rent my car on the island! One thing the book does not mention is that when you arrive at the ferry terminal, there are people there to greet you with a map of the island and pamphlets in english that detail all the spots you'll want to see. Nonetheless, the information contained in this book is well worth it if you plan to visit yakushima. Additionally, unless you plan on trekking through the island and staying in in the mountains multiple nights, I don't think the map that is suggested in the book is necessary. Yakushima is well traveled, well signed, and the trails I visited for day treks were very well marked.

About the Author
Imani True has been writing all of her life. She wrote her first erotic story in 2007, and was fortunate to team up with Dreama Skye a year later. Strawberries, Stilettos, and Steam is their first collaboration. Even though Imani has lived on the West Coast for over fifteen years, she still considers herself a Native New Yorker at heart. When she's not writing, Imani keeps busy with a traditional 9 to 5, preparing for the day when her writing pays the bills. Her dream is to write on the beaches of Hawaii or in the Caribbean. Ms. True is currently working on several novels and a few screenplays with her son. Her work can also be read in Between the Sheets, published by Delphine Publications. Another collection with Dreama Skye is already in the works.

Dreama Skye knew she was destined to be a writer from the moment she held a pen in her hand. She has been writing erotic poetry since 1998. She has focused her writing into erotic-themed stories in more recent years. Fate and destiny collided when Dreama met Imani True. Dreama was born in the beautiful bluegrass state of Kentucky where she currently resides with her two lovely daughters. Ms. Skye is currently working on a volume of erotic poetry and her first novel, as well as another collection with Imani True. More Soft Core, Less Story

Strawberries, Stilettos and Steam by Imani True and Dreama Skye is a collection of erotic shorts. The book starts off with a woman about to slip into a hot bubble bath with a glass of champagne and a bowl of strawberries beside the tub....all in front of a webcam. She opens a package that she received earlier in the day that included a book that just so happens to be Strawberries, Stilettos and Steam, and she proceeds to read. There's a story about a student that attends classes online and just so happens to to get it on while class is in session; A woman who is bi-curious and meets someone online to quench her fantasy; A young man in college notices his best-friend's mother who is bound and determined to show him he's not a little boy anymore; A masked man that is going around climbing in the window of the women in the courthouse and sexing them; a cop that fantasizes about her partner and many more.

Strawberries, Stilettos and Steam by Imani True and Dreama Skye was just okay...nothing more, nothing less. The first story in the book called "Detour" had a lot of conflicting scenes, not to mention the story with the courthouse. If a good developmental editor would have read these stories, they would have surely caught what I am referring to. There are also some editing issues, and the sex scenes were not as descriptive as they could have been. Saying they had sex for hours is not telling me exactly what they did in that time frame. There also seemed to be more girl on girl sex than any other stories. I understand that erotic is supposed to be heavily laced with sex but with a story. Unfortunately, Strawberries, Stilettos and Steam lacked the story and went straight to soft core porn.

I went through a gamut of feelings: from shy (making that phone call in 'Turned On, Turned Out'), to aroused (and wet) wanting Shade to call me in 'Pussy Dreams'! The prologue had me hooked from "web cam on"! The book is hot, spicy, and left me creaming-and wanting more!

A moving debut

I'll keep it short and sweet. Three things make this book stand out from other short story collections:
a) It is written incredibly well. The stories flow effortlessly, are written with excellent imagery and figurative language, and invoke everything from heartache to nausea.
b) It is one of those books that you could read one time for enjoyment... or you could read it three times and dig up all the many meanings.
c) This is not your Nora Roberts soap opera. Anybody can use sex and violence to make a book captivating, but it takes a master to weave a beautiful story from something more simple. Without becoming boring, Doerr masters this.
Read it, love it, and tell your friends to do the same.

The Role of Mystery in Fiction

If you were to tell me that The Shell Collector features mostly stories about people who find majesty, wonder, awe, and rejuvenation through the Mystery of Nature, I would roll my eyes and dismiss the story collection as a precious sentimental meditation on the natural world worthy of a Hallmark Card. However, the aforementioned themes are rendered with expertise, vigor, and indeed pure poetic prose so that even a cynic like myself was able to surrender to Doerr's magical stories. Here are some highlights:

1. The Shell Collector: A scientist who collects shells lives like a hermit in a isolated coastal land in Kenya where he discovers an elixir, derived from a sea snail, which forces him to contemplate the manner in which civilization usurps all of nature's wonders for its commercial purposes.

2. The Hunter's Wife: A man takes his wife into the barren wilderness where she eventually leaves him to pursue a career as a celebrity New Age figure.

3. The Caretaker: An African refugee who has seen unspeakable evil during civil war and has been coerced into doing something that violates his conscience moves to an ocean house in Oregon where he learns, through the help of a young woman, to find his redemption.

4. Mkondo: A white fossil hunter goes to Tanzania where he becomes obsessed with a young African woman whom he marries and takes back to Ohio. There the woman languishes in despair until she finds her vocation in photography, which brings her closer to nature.

Over and over again, Doerr pits the vulgarity and soul-sapping forces of civilization with the pure spiritual powers of nature as his characters attempt to straddle both worlds.

For a thematic companion to Doerr's stories, you might want to look into the 1971 film masterpiece, set in Australia, called The Walkabout, which wonderfully is now available on DVD.

Anthony Doerr is an amazing talent. His chronological age (28) does not match his literary acumen, for here is a new writer who knows his craft so well that he is destined to be one of the more important authors of his generation ... and beyond.
In THE SHELL COLLECTOR Doerr has assembled short stories that are wide ranging in locale and in content. How he is able to convey with such clarity the terrain and atmosphere of Liberia, Finland, Bavaria, Ohio etc may be credited to his own travels, but I think it is more a credit to his gifts of creating backdrops for his dramas. The young man is so in tune with nature that in a few words he is able to descibe the advent of spring, the caustic stillness of winter, the miracles of ocean life and seeds becoming plants as well as the domain of butterflies. His characters are driven in a synchronicity with natural forces to the extent that at times we are left to ponder whether the human with a name is more the main character than the land wherein he dwells.
Another aspect of the excitement these stories generate lies in the incredible tales themselves. There are no usual rehashs of familiar prototypes: each story is a cosmos rarely explored. Combine the magic of his limitless imagination with the glory of his writing skills and see if you don't agree that this is a Major New Voice in American literature. One waits for an extended novel without any concomittent fear that he will be able to produce it. Bravo!

Too many storylines for one book.

I'm a big fan of Evangeline Anderson but.. this book really requires the reader to suspend reality.. The Cyborg series is easier to believe. I also found that the issues of hazing, harassment and suicidal behavior weren't handled very well. It's hard to accept that these things were all taking place and no one. including our protagonists, was taking any action. A bit too much was thrown into the story. None of the plotlines were fully satisfied. The college pledge slave, the closeted man still in love with his college frat brother, the secret werewolf; any of these plotlines would be enough for one book. Instead, we get a little bit of each.
I'm a fan of m/m romances and I am not sorry I read this one but I cannot really recommend it either. That said, I'm sure I'll buy the next release from this author.

Good. But not great.

The other reviewer is right, the werewolf plot line comes out of nowhere and doesn't serve much of a purpose nor does it add too much to the storyline. This was a college fraternity storyline and that was why I read it. All of their drama would have been better served being filtered through that lens imo. The sex scenes are kind of hot but quite repetitive. Marie Sexton is slightly more graphic. I thought this was a sweet story and I liked it but I am not entirely sure I would recommend it unless one is looking for a college/pledge slave book. The concept was good, I suppose I just wish it had been a bit deeper. Great beginning though. Very well written and sucked me right in.

Not as good as that other book she wrote . .

This short novel started out so well. The way the two main characters are thrown together against their wills, but not against their desires, sets the story off to an entertaining start. I thought, "I am going to really enjoy this!". The were-wolf sub-plot didn't really work for me, however, and detracted from the chemistry otherwise developed. If you want to sample Evangeline Anderson's homoerotic fiction, I recommend "Broken Boundaries" as a far more enjoyable book. That is one hell of an arousingly and amusingly enjoyable story!
