My New Go-To Manual for all Things Social Entrepreneurship

Okay, so I tend to be pretty picky about these kinds of books (nonfiction, business, how-to); there's just so much "noise" in this space that it can be difficult to find high quality material, but this book is officially my go-to reference for when people ask me questions about social entrepreneurship. The author outlines the various aspects of organizing a social enterprise (what it is, legal/incorporation issues, fundraising, measuring impact, intrapreneurship) as well as the more personal-oriented aspects of social entrepreneurship (taking the entrepreneurship leap, building a career in this space, consumer habits, etc.). It covers all the major areas and gives plenty of real-world examples.

It's also written from the perspective of three rising entrepreneurs, so it's a bit more interesting than just reading your usual dry, how-to manual––and it's well-organized, so if there are only a few topics that the reader is interested in, it's easy to skim through the table of contents and find the location in the book of those topics only. Lastly, the author also makes it relevant to all sorts of people (business owners/founders, students, professors, people interesting in creating social enterprises within existing organizations) and all sorts of business (nonprofit, for profit, small, large, etc.), which makes it relatable/accessible regardless of whether you're a die-hard social entrepreneur, just getting your feet wet in this work, or merely exploring.

Great Introduction to the Social Impact Scene

As the reader quickly finds out, social entrepreneurship is a vast topic. I really can appreciate how the author is able to keep it from being “drinking from a firehose” and presenting the material in a self-contained manageable volume. What makes this possible is a great format in following three very interesting characters looking to start a social enterprise. The book, which starts out as a story, extends beyond that by dropping in tons of knowledge with qualified sources, and ends up a very credible reference. You can tell a lot of research went into it especially in the areas of legal structure, fundraising, and the global scene for social impact. I think this is a great introduction and provides the framework for anyone wanting to enter the space.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the book as a curious reader who hopes one day to enter the social impact scene. Additionally, as a relatively newer topic in entrepreneurship, there doesn't seem to be much material available to help guide, making this book all the more necessary and valued. This would be a great addition to Business school curriculum.

Everything you need to know in a practical, easy-to-follow format

This is a FANTASTIC guide to the world of social entrepreneurship. When I first read the example Parekh structures the book around (getting healthy, affordable food to low-income people living in "food deserts"), I thought: 'In the absence of a billionaire investor bankrolling the project, how would you even go about doing that?!' Now I know! She provides a step-by-step narrative--complete with trial and error--showing one real-world way that it could be done. That's my favorite thing about this book: It offers practical, down-to-earth advice you can really use. If you're thinking about social entrepreneurship, do yourself a favor and read this book and keep it as a reference. It's jam-packed with everything you need to know--and it's incredibly inspiring, as well!

As with the guides to the Hobbit tetralogy and the fiction of Stephen King, Gabaldon offers a companion volume to her Outlander Seriess four time-travel historical romances, Drums of Autumn (1997), etc., in which she tells us much is revealed regarding Claire and Jamie Fraser, their lives and times, antecedents, adventures, companions and progeny, with learned commentary (and many footnotes) by their humble creator. She also provides full synopses of the four novels and includes excerpts of forthcoming books in the Claire and Jamie Fraser series. Listed, too, are all the novels characters, their origins and family trees, horoscopes, and sketches of clan badges and shields, along with genealogical notes. For non-Gaelic readers, Gabaldon assembles a glossary and pronunciation primer. A fantastic COMPANION to the Outlandish series

I absolutely loved The Outlandish Companion. I think it deserves one star for the Gaelic pronunciations and explanations, a second star for the sketches and pictures (loved seeing Claire's rings!), a third star for the character list, a fourth star for Diana taking the time to answer all of those questions from everyone, and the fifth star for her explanation of where characters come from. I would give her a sixth star for her wit and humor if Amazon gave me that option. I was a little surprised to see how closely the horoscopes matched Jamie and Claire's personalities. Diana didn't write the horoscopes anyway, they were sent to her and she liked them so she included them for anyone who was interested. Who cares that they are fictional characters? Not me. The fact that Diana has made Jamie, Claire & Co. 'real' to so many people is an amazing accomplishment itself. I enjoyed the Companion for the reasons I listed above. Will I read the book cover to cover repeatedly? No. Will I go through it fairly often? Yes. Why? Because it's interesting information and I participate in Outlandish Trivia Games and I could use all the help I can get. My book was worth every penny I spent on it and I hope to someday have it signed along with the rest of my books. Great job Diana and I look forward to books 5 & 6 as well as the next Companion!

A wee bit o' fun, not somethin' t'draw steel over!

I didn't read the Outlander series. I devoured it.
Normally, I'd rather be strung up and dunked head first into a vat of cold parritch than be forced to read "romance" novels, but Ms. Gabaldon's books went straight to my Celtic heart. I bought used copies in paperback to share with friends and hard cover editions for my library--that's a wee bit of change, but well worth it.
Before ordering the Companion, I spent time flipping through a copy at the bookstore--and that might be a good idea if some of you aren't sure you want to spend the money on this--personally, I was laughing out loud and one lady even asked me "Is it good? What are you reading?" Grinning, I stuck a copy of Outlander in her hands...and yep, she bought it.
I keep running into Outlandish people everywhere, and it's great. Diana--thank you so much for the many, many hours spent in the pleasurable company of the Fraser clan.
Okay, put up your swords and stop hagglin' over the book. Check it out first and buy it or not. Mine is on order right now....
(PS: I KNEW she had to be a Doctor Who fan! I mean "Fraser Hines/Jamie McCrimmon"? Had to be!)

Fascinating reference

I borrowed this book to read while awaiting the sixth book in the Outlander series (a day without Jamie and Claire is like a day without sunshine!)

The Outlandish Companion gives synopses of the first four books in the series, and does so quite well. Had I known of the existence of this book, I'd have likely skipped over a good deal of Dragonfly in Amber, settling for the synopsis to get to the meaty Voyager. (Sorry, Dragonfly fans...everyone's entitled to their preferences...)

Diana Gabaldon explains many things here (including the pronunciation of her own last name, which I'd been mangling). I was particularly impressed with her willingness to outline her writing methodology, admit her copy errors (people actually picked on her because her cherry trees were out of season, LOL), and go to great lengths to create an understandable translation of her Gaelic, French, and European English references. She also very neatly addresses some of the most controversial portions of the Outlander series without apology.

Since some of her characters disappear only to recur two or three books later, Gabaldon gives us a comprehensive character listing, up to and including Leroi.

There is some "Work In Progress" material too, which is spoiler-ish to those who haven't yet read The Fiery Cross.

If you love this series and plan to own it in hardcover, by all means buy the Companion. You'll do fine without it, but it's still an enjoyable read.

An overdue easy-to-digest explanation

This is a vital book for anyone involved with any aspect of HIV. Without going to the question of whether she is right or wrong (and I think she is right), I will say that the book is good in that it is easily approachable. HIV books are often, necessarily, mired in dense medical and biological terms ("non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors"). This book shines in its ability to explain those terms simply and effectively.
My only complaint here is that nearly half the book is either references or appendices -- ancilliary material. While that's certainly helpful and appreciated, it leaves the reader with little more than a big pamphlet.
Still, it's a great book to read, especially at a low price.

Not a drop of smugness

This book gives a balanced, scientifically verifiable assessment of the HIV/AIDS hypothesis/debate. NOWHERE in this book does Ms. Maggiore come across as smug or arrogant, or 'ha ha, I'm alive, you're dead' as one reviewer so idiotically put it. Her writing is concise, to the point, and devoid of mere opinions. The people who have written scathing criticisms of this book either did not read the entire book, or perhaps have reading comprehension difficulties. An excellent short summary, and a good lead-in to Peter Duesberg's seminal work "Inventing the AIDS Virus." Read it with your brain turned on. The AIDS issue in the U.S., as Ms. Maggiore put it so well, is a clear case of the victory of Politics over Science, Religion over Reason. Science is not about 'silencing' other theories and hypotheses that one doesn't agree with. Leave that sort of facism to tele-evangelists. If it were so, we would still be using leaches to cure disease.

a informative book

this book does a great job of explaining WHY we all need t-shirts with three wolves and a moon. Many fashion textbooks make you think that t shirts with one, or even two wolves are fashion musts.
But Dr. Yurchisin makes it clear that a three wolves t shirt has significantly MORE wolves.

Not as good as the older edition.... per the students!

Half of our students purchased this newer edition of the pocket protocol book.... the other half purchased the older edition. The students did not like the new edition and thought it was lacking compared to the older green version. Several sold this one and bought the older green version!!!!

Maybe I should make a protocol book...

Protocols? Where?
It's just the same 10 images repeating for every study. I am starting out at a job and this doesn't help me in any way what so ever. Very disappointed for such an expensive book. No discription of probe placement. No discription of where to start. Extremely vague.
