A noteworthy development in the field of excavating machinery has taken place since the publication of the book, "Excavating Machinery" in 1913. The author has received so many requests for information concerning the more recent types of excavators and the newer uses of older types, that it has seemed desirable to present this work.

The new book embodies some of the material of the former work, but is entirely re-cast and largely re-written. The new text has two general divisions; the first comprising a description of the construction, method and typical cost of operation of each type of excavator, and the second embodying a comparative study of the efficient and economic use of the different types of machines in the various fields of construction work. The author has endeavored to describe the make and types of excavators commonly used in all classes of work. He has not attempted to describe or even mention every make of excavator, but every type has been treated in sufficient detail to give a clear idea of its construction and field of work.

The cost data are not intended to be an arbitrary guide for the use of any type of excavator in any stated class of work. The conditions and circumstances attending work of this character are so variable, and there are usually so many unforeseen factors which affect the progress of a job, that information of this kind can only be suggestive. The illustrative "costs of operation" given in the first division, are merely typical outlines. The quantities should be modified to suit local conditions and combined with ruling prices to secure usable cost data for any definite case. In the second division the cost data have been selected to offer a variety of conditions on recent examples of earthwork. No attempt has been made to standardize these data or to formulate the results for any series of operations for any type of machine. The author has derived many equations from his experience, but hesitates to publish them on account of their possible misuse.

Likes:
A lot of great quotes collected by author; easy to read; eye-pleasing layout (will not make eyes tired).

This book had too much quotes. I thought it could use a little bit more elaboration on certain quotes/topics, but still a good book to have on the shelf and pickup when you need a boost of motivation.

About the Author

Dayna Laur

Dayna Laur is a veteran high school social studies teacher of 14 years where she has implemented numerous authentic learning experiences in her co-taught special education classes, advanced placement courses, and mainstream social studies classes. During her teaching tenure she has been featured in Edutopia's Schools That Work series and as a model teacher for authentic learning as produced by the National Institute for Professional Practice.

She currently serves as a Senior National Faculty member for the Buck Institute for Education and travels nationally to train teachers on effective implementation of project-based learning.

She has a BA in History from VA Tech, a MEd in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Pittsburgh, and a MSEd in 21st Century Teaching and Learning from Wilkes University. She is also a two-time National Board Certified teacher. She has written articles that have appeared in Tech-Edge and EARCOS Journal. She has a full-length publication entitled Authentic Learning Experiences: A Real-World Approach to Project Based Learning. In addition to authentic learning experiences, Dayna's educational interests include the implementation of the Common Core Standards and technology integration. As a long time fan of online learning and online personal learning networks, I was eager to read "Instant Edmodo." The book didn't disappoint. In 15 minutes I was following along with the step-by-step instructions and well on my way to setting up not only a classroom, but an entire collaborative social environment of my choosing.

Laur makes it easy to understand the product goals, uses and full potential of the Edmodo environment. Topics covered include access levels, groups, functions such as assessment, polling and grading. Laur also delves into time-saving techniques and features such as relaunching assignments from previously created ones (teachers love templates!) and Edmodo's Planner.

Collaboration within the application is covered. Teachers will learn how to create and moderate groups of students, how to interact with them, and how to use the Edmodo wall. Laur adds further relevance by adding an online safety discussion.

External social media and other tools are not left out as a component of the Edmodo environment. In fact, Laur includes details on incorporating favorites such as Voice Thread and Khan Academy with this already robust environment.

Anthony Fawcett was born in 1948 in England and studied Fine Art at Oxford. He started writing as an art critic. He lives in New York and wrote this book in 1976. Fawcett worked full time with John and Yoko running their office, organizing their daily schedule, and cataloging their writings and films (`Introduction'). Lennon had a complex and varying character (pp.10-11).

`Part One - The Man' tells how his life when he met John Lennon. It tells about "The Acorn Event", a project called "art". Was Lennon's arrest for drugs caused by planted evidence (p.39)? Did the "Two Virgins" album show mental problems (p.40)? "Demented freaks" (p.41)? "I was stoned all the time" (p.42). John was "dropping acid almost constantly" (p.43). Did the events in "The Peace Politician" have any effect?

There were big problems in mismanagement at Apple (p.81). These money problems led to the end of the Beatles (p.89). "The Dream Is Over" tells about John's feelings. The Lennon's moved to New York in 1971 and lived in the West Village (p.119). But President Nixon personally ordered him kicked out of America (p.124). In 1976 John became a permanent resident of the US (p.149).

`Part Two - The Magic' tells about John as a musician, poet, and painter. The author is a fan of John Lennon. Others will not find it worth their time to read this book. It presents John as a deeply troubled individual, probably due to his use of drugs. Whiskey did the same job on other singers. In December 1980 a national monthly magazine printed an interview with John Lennon. They quoted him as going around Manhattan without a bodyguard. One reader knew this would make him an unprotected target, and acted on this news. Sic transit gloria mundi.

This book was the worst purchase I've ever made! It was all to pieces and couldn't even read it! The binding was rotted and the pages fell out! Very disappointed!!!

His idea was to mount a cylinder on a strong frame, so that it could be turned by hand, or by horse or water power. The cylinder was to be provided with rows of teeth, which passed through narrow openings in a curved plate or grating of metal. The rows of teeth, or circular saws, were to be about three fourths of an inch apart. The cotton was to be put into a box, or hopper, so that it rested against the grating through which the saw teeth protruded. When the cylinder was turned, its sharp teeth would catch the cotton and drag it through the grating, tearing it from the seeds and dropping it on the other side, soft and clean. The seeds, which had been left behind, would fall to the bottom of the hopper and pass out through an opening just large enough to let them pass. They would be uninjured by the process, and ready to be planted for another cotton crop.

Mr. Whitney worked rapidly in spite of many inconveniences. But when all was done except the cylinder, progress stopped for a time. His idea had been to make circular saws and mount them one after the other on the cylinder. To make them, he must have tin or steel plates. As he could not buy or make such plates, he was obliged to contrive some other way of making the teeth on the cylinder.
