Wow! This book is a life-changer. Is there an insatiable hunger in your heart for more of God? To experience His presence in your life in a more tangible way? While reading this book during my morning quiet times with God I have experienced His presence In such a beautiful life-changing way. I urge you to get this book and allow Fred Hartley to teach you from the word of God how you too can experience the sweet presence of our Lord Jesus Christ in a more tangible way. Your life will never be the same. The things of this world will melt more and more away from your life, you will become more sensitive to the Holy Spirit, and will not want to grieve Him in any way because nothing this world has to offer compares to the sweet manifest presence Christ. If you have this hunger in your heart thank God for it for He is the one who has put that hunger in your heart and He alone can fill it.

Good and enjoyable read

Many years have passed since this book has first been published, and while it is a great and helpful read, I feel that some of the problems are not as easily approached today as they have been 15, 25 or 50 years ago. But regardless, it is well written, easy and enjoyable to read and helps a (Montessori) teacher to stay open minded when looking for a new approach to an issue. In fact, I recommended this book to quite a few parents, hoping that it will give them some guidance and insight. Miss Vanessa [...]

Required reading for my Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residents

Donna Bryant Goertz has written the most incredible book ever. This book made it necessary for me to completely rethink my own practice of psychiatry and how to best work with children with any number of challenges, inspired me to take a sabbatical year to do AMI Elementary training (at the amazing Hershey Montessori Training Institute), and has enchanted and delighted my very very dear residents who have repeatedly voted this very book their most favorite of the hundreds of assigned readings they must complete as part of their own education. I cannot say enough good things about this book, and about the wonderful experiences that some very fortunate children have had in Donna's early elementary community. We have now developed an experience at a local Montessori school for all of our residents, so that they can see for themselves the wonderful outcomes for all children when they are in Montessori communities like Donna's, guided by prepared adults who make it their priority that every child is received with love, optimism, empathy, humor, grace, and did I mention love? I have ordered and given away this book 15 times already (just ordered again 10 minutes ago) and will probably order it 15 times over again. Thank you, Donna, for this wonderful gift. You changed my life, and are changing the lives of 11 residents this year, who will hopefully pay it forward in their future practices all of this wisdom. If I am ever allowed to teach the Mind Committee at the CWRU Medical School ever again, I will require all 200+ medical students to read your book as well. This book should be required reading at all levels of psychiatry and pediatric residency training, and all child psychology and abnormal psychology undergraduate courses, as well as all early childhood education pedagogy courses. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. Also, pairs beautifully with Ross Greene's "Lost At School", a course in how teachers/Guides can use Collaborative Problem Solving to help children who are not yet peaceful (another big favorite of the residents).

A humanistic approach to a younger society.

The real classroom stories in this book demonstrate that education can and must include the transmission of values - amongst which is the realization of the innate value of each and every child as they grow to be included in the healthy functioning of a greater society. Goertz has created a meaningful society of children who are called upon to be themselves, know themselves, and then grow themselves in the most satisfying and unexpected ways, while valuing the very same process within their classmates. A true community emerges.

This book speaks to anyone interested in a hero's journey of sorts - for our youth and for ourselves. It demonstrated that with a shift in an adult's perception and actions, and by not allowing ourselves to buy into any conventional paradigm of children and their abilities, there can emerge a dynamic, meaningful and peace - oriented society. Within these pages, Goertz demonstrates the tenacity and intelligence of childhood, capable of creating an inclusive, harmonic society as it beautifully mirrors the potential of our own adult society.

As a Montessori guide myself, I was heartened by Goertz's compassionate and wise approach to working with her students. Now I hope we can have another book - this time featuring a 3-6 community - written in the same style which makes me feel as though I'm a fly on the classrooom wall with much to learn!

It helped me under stand the Catholic position.

Upon This Rock was a well written and thought out book. It gave all the sources that he used and helped me to understand the depth of the Catholic position. I do not agree with Mr. Ray's conclusion but now I realize I may well be wrong. I think one goal of this book was to defend the Catholic Church and show why the church claims the authority it does. I have to admit many of my presuppositions have been changed and his work has helped me understand and even respect the faith of Catholics that much more.

Awestruck...

After reading opinions by James White and William Webster on the same subject, I thought I'd been given the full truth. But Mr. Ray's further, deeper development on White's/Webster's study showed me that I had only been given an incomplete story. What else about the Protestant faith is only "partially" developed ? Mr. Ray's presentation is overwhelming. One particular nugget in the goldmine of truth was not detailed in the New Testament, Old Testament, or the Church Fathers. It was a geography lesson on Caesarea Philllipi. It had never dawned on me what a long journey this was for Jesus and his disciples. The significance of the journey and the rock have come into focus!

I am now dedicating myself to learning what other partial truths have been developed fully by the catholic church.

Great Book

The discussion was excellent in that it chronicled the Office of the Papacy both in Scripture and in history. It is an excellent source book and demonstrated excellent research techniques especially in the Early Church Fathers documentation and reference. There are a great deal of footnotes, but unlike some books, these footnotes are very readable and useable either in a discussion as a Catholic Christian Apologist or as a bibliography in a paper. I highly recommend this book.

About the Author
Angel Smith is Lecturer in Modern Spanish History at the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, University of Leeds. He has published widely on Catalan and Spanish labour, and on nationalism and national identity in Spain. His books include An Historical Dictionary of Spain (1996), Nationalism and the Nation in the Iberian Peninsula (1996) (co-edited with Clare Mar-Molinero), The Crisis of 1898: Colonial Redistribution and Nationalist Mobilization (1999) (co-edited with Emma Dávila-Cox), and Nationalism, Labour and Ethnicity (1999) (co-edited with Stefan Berger). At present he is completing a history of labour and anarchism in Catalonia between 1898 and 1923.

Grade 2–4—A gentle tribute to Emma Lazarus, very much in the style of Barbara Cooney's Eleanor (Viking, 1996). Glaser describes the poet as a child of privilege who was moved by the plight of immigrants in the 1880s. On a visit to Ward's Island, "her heart hurt to see them." She began helping them to learn English and get jobs, and she increased awareness of their plight through her poetry and other writings. Asked, along with other writers of the time such as Mark Twain and Walt Whitman, to write a poem to raise money for a pedestal for the Statue of Liberty, she composed one that became part of the fabric of America. Nivola's delicately composed watercolor and gouache paintings appear in frames on each page, with a few lines of potent text in clean white space either underneath or to the side. The pictures, with their slight folk-art feel, capture both the time and action of the story, while the text illuminates the woman. An author's note and the full text of the poem complete the book. A must for every Library

Emma Lazarus was a young woman full of passion, integrity and had a very strong message to be told. She was a writer, a Jew, and most importantly a woman who wanted her voice to be heard. She lived in New York City during the late 1880's in a family full of fortune and wealth. One day she visited the New York Harbor where she saw many impoverished immigrants, Jews and non-Jews who had traveled from afar for freedom in America. She began to help these people, which then inspired her to write one of the most powerful poems. This poem, The New Colossus, gave the Statue of Liberty a voice to welcome all new immigrants to the United States. In Emma's Poem, author Linda Glaser, writes about Emma Lazarus as a little girl and then a grown woman who creates a beautiful sonnet that is now inscribed on the Statue of Liberty. Claire Nivola, the Illustrator creates elegant full-page illustrations done in watercolors and Gouache. The magical pictures are painting like in that they make the story come to life with intricate details. The pictures along with the words tell a beautiful story that is part of our American history and one that should never be forgotten.

This book is recommended for children ages 4-8 and highly recommended for all libraries. Linda Glaser is a fabulous author that has written many other wonderful picture books including: Mrs. Greenberg's Messy Hanukkah, The Borrowed Hanukkah Latkes, Our Big Home: An Earth Poem, Bridge to America and many others. Emma's Poem includes an author's note at the back of the book along with the full text of the poem, The New Colossus. Most important, this story teaches children how Emma's poem and the Statue of Liberty came together and are an important part of our history and life.

This is a stunning portrait of a woman, a people, and time so very important in American history! "Give me your tired ..."

Emma could count herself among the fortunate few. She was always dressed nicely and had a lot of food. Best of all she had "plenty of love from her family." They lived in a large beautiful home in New York City. Naturally, Emma thought that everyone lived liked they did. When she grew up, she became a "well-known writer," but she began to notice that not all people were as fortunate as she and her family had been. When she visited Ward's Island in New York Harbor she was greatly saddened by the poor, sick, and tired immigrant population she saw who came in search of a better life on the shores of the United States.

Many, like Emma, were Jewish and had escaped the madness of Eastern Europe. They were intelligent, but came with nothing. Many came without their "friends and relatives who had been killed." It was during the 1880s that she began to work with them. She helped them learn English, find work and in return she found friends. People looked their noses down on this type of practice and even more so on the people she helped. One day Emma "heard about a statue being constructed in France as a gift of friendship for the United States." In an effort to raise money, famous writers were asked to write something in commemoration. Emma had an idea . . .

This is a stunning portrait of a woman, a people, and time so very important in American history. Of course, Emma is the one who penned the poem that reads in part, "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses . . . " Undoubtedly few people know about Emma Lazarus, a woman all but forgotten by history, but her famous poem still blazes strong. The art work was strong, bold, and depicted those huddled masses perfectly. In the back of the book is a photograph of Emma, an interesting biographical vignette by the author, and the poem in its entirety. This is a wonderful historical book that deserved a place on your classroom, library, or homeschool shelves!

Before reading Linda Glaser's simple, yet eloquent picture book, Emma's Poem, one might think one knew most of what there was to know about the Statue of Liberty: gift from France, stands in New York harbor, has a poem on its pedestal written by Emma Lazarus. Glaser's book tells the story behind the woman who wrote that poem. Emma Lazarus grew up in the lap of luxury. Her visit, one day, to Ward's Island, entry port for many tired, hungry and poor immigrants, had a profound effect on her. These immigrants, mainly Jews like herself, had been terribly mistreated in their home countries. Emma felt compelled to help them. But immigrants were not well received in Emma's social circle, an image she vowed to help change. When asked to contribute a poem to an anthology being put together to raise money for the Statue of Liberty pedestal, Emma wrote her now-famous words to welcome all immigrants to our country, words so powerful they were eventually etched on a plaque attached to the pedestal itself. All immigrants would now read Emma's welcoming words: Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free. Glaser's descriptive text, combined with illustrator Clair A. Nivola's careful attention to the historical details of the late 1800's, make Emma's Poem a book not to be missed. Although the book is intended for ages 4-8, anyone interested in American history and/or the Statue of Liberty would definitely enjoy reading this wonderful journey back through time to Emma Lazarus's world. About the Author
Robert Conroy was the author of a run of hugely popular alternate history novels, including Himmler’s War and Rising Sun for Baen Books. His 1942, which is set within a Japanese conquest of Hawaii, won the prestigious Sidewise Award for alternate histories. Conroy wrote for Military History magazine and traveled extensively in Europe where he took a special interest in battlefields, historical collections and castles. An interesting what if...

So Custer lives becomes President (can't be that bad right). Starts the war with Spain over Cuba, commits the U.S. into Manifest Destiny, shows that he is arrogant (surprise), can't hold his drink, manipulated by his wife...Great read, what if, just needs to be believable, and it is.

Good but Needs a Proper Ending

I want to give this book 5 stars, I really do. From the beginning to end, this is some of Kyell Gold's best writing and with characters that have deep, interesting pasts that are explored and prodded at very carefully and well done. And the way he writes really leads you through each stage of the main character's own conflict, which is awesome since there is so much tension built up here.

But then it just ends. Like I'm not spoiling anything for anyone either, but just know that when the tension has reached a peak and all that can be done now is resolution, that's when Gold calls it and the story just stops. And for that I had to subtract two stars.

Should you read this book? If you like Kyell Gold's work then you should already have a copy in your collection. If you've never read his stuff before, this probably isn't the best place to start since there are so many conflicts and you really do need to understand his flow (also, it's not his best work in my honest opinion). But yes, definitely worth the read. And maybe later he'll give the Kindle version an update that adds extended chapters to finish off what he started.

An amazing story, but it leaves off at such a ...

An amazing story, but it leaves off at such a huge cliffhanger that made me thirsty to see a resolution for the characters. A lot more could have been done with these characters but there's no fight in the characters that the realism in them for most of the story just kind of disappears in the end. There's no true resolution and it feels as though the characters are just rolling over and dying rather than pushing forward in the last part. I can only wish that Kyell will do more with Jackson and move forward. If it wasn't for the ending upsetting me so much, I'd have given this story a higher rating.

But don't let that discourage you. The story is amazing and definitely deserves the praise that it's received.

Edit: After months of mulling over the story, I had to reduce the rating from 4 to 2. I had given it a 4 because the writer had always done so much to encourage me as a writer, but after rereading the story and thinking it over, I've decided that while it is a good tale, it does not deserve a good rating. Throughout most of the story, we are given foreshadowing of what's to come, but in the end, it's not what happens.

The main character, Jackson, starts off with certain wants and needs at the beginning of the story and by the end, not only has he fulfilled neither of them, but he just feels like a completely different person altogether and the transition isn't there. Yes, the story needs to be read, but it also needs a true proper ending. And using "hollywood romanticizes romance" as an excuse is not enough. I don't know of any person that would do things the way Jackson did. I need to go on record and say that I firmly believe that this story not only deserves, but NEEDS that "hollywood ending" because that is the direction it was heading right from the start. To end it in such a manner where the character has not learned a true lesson, but had changed and deviated from who he is is wrong.

I am a writer and for me, this story tears me apart because we don't see any of the "drifting" that the character have that the author claims there to be, in fact it seems quite the opposite right from the beginning. We see a man who has a passion that is stolen from him in more than one way with no will to fight for any of his passions evident anymore. It is an outrage to end a story where the character has not learned a lesson and won the fight. It just feels like the character has lost. Simple as that.

Fantastic Read. Delightfully Unfulfilling.

This books flows so fast and so smoothly, I didn't want to put it down! And then it ended.

If you're looking for a long and winding tale that leaves all the characters happily ever after, look elsewhere. This is a real novella; it tells a breathtaking story for 150 pages and then stops.

I will definitely be reading this again.
